Information about Rachel

I am currently undertaking a full-time PhD at Liverpool John Moores University after being awarded a Principal’s Scholarship from the university for academic excellence. I undertook my BA in English and my MA in Victorian Literature, Art and Culture at Royal Holloway University of London where I attained First-Class Honours and Distinction grades respectively. When initially apply for my undergraduate degree I was accepted into Cambridge after successfully completing the written examination and interview stages. Unfortunately, I was unable to accept the offer due to family commitments as I was the sole carer for my elderly grandmother at the time who lived in Egham next to Royal Holloway University. However, this has given me great insight into the Oxbridge application process which has proven invaluable to some of my high achieving students.

I absolutely love teaching and plan to progress into a career in higher education in the future. I have been teaching for nine years now and attained a TEFL certificate (Distinction grade) in 2015 which certifies my ability to teach English as a foreign language and increased my theoretical knowledge of teaching to complement my years of practical teaching experience. I am currently a Seminar Leader at Liverpool John Moores University where I teach undergraduate students. I am also a freelance content writer for jobs.ac.uk where I produce blogs and vlogs which advise students on navigating higher education.

For young people, I specialise in support for GCSE and A level work, personal statement support, and interview preparation of all academic sorts. For adults, I specialise in preparing students to sit the British Council’s General and Academic IELTS exams.

I do a lot of prep work and research for my sessions to keep students motivated and to make the class run as smoothly as possible. I pride myself on my ability to build my students confidence. Teaching is not just a part-time job for me because I love seeing students develop into confident, intelligent and impressive young people and assisting adults who wish to improve their language skills. Whilst I specialise in teaching secondary school pupils, I am also experienced in teaching young children and adults.

I currently live in London, but I travel often to undertake academic research or to give lecturers. Therefore, I teach exclusively online. I was sceptical at first about transitioning from in-person to online teaching but have been very pleasantly surprised by the results. The ‘safety of the screen’ enables students to feel more relaxed, as does being in their own environment, which makes it easier to build rapport and encourage nervous or anxious students to share their thoughts more easily. Also, this format (free through Skype) means that students do not have to travel, and we increase actual teaching time by being able to dive straight into the lesson without the usual 10 minutes wasted and the beginning or end of an in-person lesson with getting comfortable and packing up etc or any delays caused by transport issues.

If you have any questions, then please feel free to message me. I hope that we can work together soon.

Availability: Every day.

Willing to travel: 50 miles

Experience: I have been tutoring secondary school students for 9 years and have taught some young children and many adults at various points throughout this time as well. I received a Distinction grade TEFL (Teaching English as a Foreign Language) qualification in July 2015. I attained a BA in English with First-Class Honours and an MA in Victorian Literature, Art and Culture with a Distinction grade, both at Royal Holloway University of London. I am currently undertaking a PhD in Literature at Liverpool John Moores University thanks to being awarded a Principal`s Scholarship for academic excellence. I am currently a Seminar Leader at Liverpool John Moores University where I teach undergraduate students. I am also a freelance content writer for jobs.ac.uk where I produce blogs and vlogs which advise students on navigating higher education.

Last summer (June 2018), all of my GCSE and A level students met exceeded their predicted English GCSE grades with the majority achieving grades 7-9.
