Information about Thomas

A bit about myself:

Hi! I am a student currently studying a PhD in Mathematics at Imperial College London, who tutors individuals and small groups around my studies. My current research focuses on the programming and numerical methods required for solving the fluid dynamics equations governing ocean behaviour. As part of my course, I have acquired a research Masters degree (MRes) in the Mathematics of Planet Earth, being awarded a distinction. In 2018, I graduated from Bath with a first class Masters degree in mathematics (MMath). Around my studies, I teach A Level Mathematics at Westminster Tutors, and have been significantly involved in online teaching.

I am enthusiastic about Mathematics, and learning, and am looking forward to inspiring my enthusiasm in others and helping those studying it and related fields to realise their full potential.

I am able to tutor Maths, Physics, Chemistry and Latin with students anywhere up to GCSE level, and tutor Physics or Mathematics (including Further Mathematics) up to A Level.

I am also be prepared to tutor beyond or outside of the qualifications listed above, and am particularly interested in students who need some extra guidance to achieve their full potential. I am happy to consider tutoring content up to and including undergraduate level in pure or applied mathematics, Further Maths A Level and STEP.

I graduated from Bath with a first class MMath (Master of Mathematics) degree in early 2018. Most of my what I studied is `Analysis` or `Mechanics`, and I am particularly interested in the applications of Mathematics in modern Physics and Climate Science. I have undertaken research projects on the El Nino climate system, Atmospheric Physics, Machine Learning for Weather Forecasts, Numerical Simulations of Nuclear Fusion and Climate Modelling.

I am passionate about improving awareness and understanding of mathematics and related disciplines wherever possible. As well as running workshops and taking tutorials at the university, I have been involved in voluntary work to increase public engagement with mathematics. This includes giving talks on probabilities to local school groups, acting as a mentor for the UKMT`s mentoring scheme in the current year, and being a part of the organising committee for 2019`s Mathscon, a large public event celebrating mathematics, open to the public and students.

I offer a 1-hour half-price `trial` session before any commitment to tutoring. This is mostly to get to know the tutee and what you want out of the tutorials, as well as allowing the tutee to get to know me and make sure that I am right for you. This session will include some content tutoring if time permits.

I have full A-Levels in Mathematics (A*), Further Mathematics (A*), Physics (A*), Chemistry (A), Latin (A) and General Studies (A), and an AS-Level in Geography (A). At GCSE, I have 10A*s and one A grade, as well as a `Free-Standing Mathematics Qualification` in modelling.

Availability: I am a full-time student, which means I usually have high availability and flexibility, but have some necessary commitments, most of which are regular.

With online sessions, I usually find that using a combination of mathematical typing software and a shared whiteboard via a platform such as Skype or Zoom has worked well, but there is a lot of scope to be flexible and find something that works for the tutee.

Willing to travel: 15 miles

Experience: I have been a teacher of A Level Maths with Westminster Tutors since 2019, and have tutored privately through Tutorhunt since my first year of undergraduate studies in 2015.

In my 3rd and 4th undergraduate years, I took tutorial classes and marked homework for first-year undergraduate courses in Real Analysis and Linear Algebra. I have also worked with university departments in providing drop-in workshops and video content (including livestream revision lectures) for 1st and 2nd Year Maths students.

I have tutored extensively AS and A Level Mathematics on the MEI and Edexcel syllabi, and Mathematics at GCSE level, and have also tutored A Level Physics and Chemistry, and adult learners in areas of Mathematics. I have had some experience of tutoring Latin at the KS3 level.

I currently have tutees studying GCSE, A Level Maths and Further Maths.

I am active in volunteering and outreach within mathematics, including being the runner-up in the Oxford regional competition of Famelab, with my talks on `Uncertainty in the world around us` and `From Caligula to supercomputer: our changing understanding of the oceans`.

My son needed to gain confidence and clarity in his maths and Latin for his forthcoming CE exams. Tom has been calm, knowledgeable, friendly and confident in his tutorials and his explanations of what is happening in the maths and Latin has made the subjects clearer for my son and has given him the confidence he needed.
