Information about Ruth

I am a highly skilled languages teacher with over 20 years of teaching experience in a number of different schools, the last nine at a secondary school in York. I am passionate about teaching languages and securing the best outcomes for my students. Success in languages is about building up confidence and I am excellent at fostering positive working relationships with all my students. I have high expectations but know how to pitch material so that there is an appropriate amount of challenge. I am equally adept at stretching the most able as well as helping students who find languages hard going and need some positive reinforcement. I also have extensive experience teaching adults for both leisure and business.

Availability: I have availability most days and evenings.

Willing to travel: 20 miles

Experience:
I am dynamic and nurturing tutor, focused on building relationships and confidence.I am enthusiastic and positive making lessons enjoyable and appropriately challenging. I use a variety of activities which are engaging and designed to build up confidence, reinforce learning and lead to successful outcomes (whether you are looking to be stretched to a high level or need more basic foundations). In a one hour session, I would always aim to cover at least three of the four skills skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing I pride myself on being able to explain grammar points clearly and I always teach grammar within the context of the topic to make it more meaningful. I would always aim in my first lesson to understand the needs of the student and agree upon a planned structure over a number of lessons, identifying particular areas of focus. My lessons have structure, pace and challenge but also breathing space to digest material and ask questions. Material is tailored to the individual. The beginning of lessons would recap previously learnt material (retrieval practice) and at the end of lessons , there would always be a summary of what had been learnt. I regularly assess knowledge (but not in a scary way) using interactive exercises, quizzes any exam preparation would use practice papers/exam material similar to the exam format. I believe very strongly in giving constructive feedback that always moves learning forward.

My knowledge of the exam system is extensive. I have taught Edexcel, OCR and AQA at A Level but most recently I have followed the AQA syllabus. At GCSE, I have taught both AQA and OCR, having recent experience with both exam boards. I am very aware of the exam requirements for GCSE and A Level and have undergone training in Standardisation and moderation in preparation for the Centre Assessed grade last year and am very knowledgeable of the standards required for each of the grades at both GCSE and A Level French. I have also prepared students for Oxbridge entry with a 100% success rate.
