I have an MA in Classics (Latin and Ancient Greek) from Cambridge University and am passionate about the languages and civilisations. I am competent in both languages and can teach from scratch. I have a broad knowledge of Latin and Ancient Greek literature and I teach how to understand texts for GCSE and A Level. I also teach English Language, English Literature and French to GCSE and tutor for 11+ and Common Entrance exams.
My teaching approach is to tailor the lessons to the child`s needs and to make them enjoyable and interesting. Many of my pupils in English GCSE approached me because they were having difficulty writing essays to time under exam conditions. I have enabled them to achieve this by breaking down the allotted time into segments for an introduction, the various points to be made, a conclusion, plus time for checking their work. I also teach them to improve their punctuation which adds to their marks.
My style of teaching Latin, Greek and French is to concentrate on the grammar. I find that pupils understand this better if they translate sentences from English into those languages. However, too much grammar can be overwhelming and so it is important to balance that with interesting translations into English as well as having discussions about the culture, history and literature of those civilisations.
My Common Entrance and 11+ teaching is tailored to the entrance exam for each school. The maths papers contain standard topics but there`s wide variation for English. Some schools require only an essay for English entrance, others set a comprehension and verbal reasoning questions.
The exam results of my GCSE pupils have all exceeded their schools` expectations and every one of my Common Entrance and 11+ pupils have secured places at their desired schools. One of my pupils, whom I was teaching Latin and French, won a scholarship to Winchester College in 2023.
