Information about Ruth
I am a secondary English, Drama and Media teacher with a passion for inspiring students to actively engage with texts. I enjoy working with students of all abilities and enabling them to understand, explore and manipulate language in a range of forms and styles, both as every day life skills and to enable them to gain qualifications.
Although my background is secondary teaching through my Masters in Education and working as a Literacy Advisor for a Special Needs school I have an excellent knowledge of working with emerging readers and writers from below National Curriculum level 1 and of synthetic phonics.
I have experience working with both schooled and home educated children. I offer face-to-face and online tutoring.
Availability: I am able to tutor after school, or during the school day. I am available in term-time and school holidays.
Willing to travel: 10 miles
Experience: I have taught in a range of schools and at a range of levels from Entry Level to A-Level. I have also worked with home educated and schooled children of Primary school age.
I have taught in schools from 2001, with a range of full time posts as well as experience abroad. When I had children, I studied for my Masters in Education and then took on a part time role. I currently work as a tutor and supply teacher to enable a flexible work and family situation.
The last two teaching posts I held were Head of English in a challenging London school and Literacy Advisor in a special needs secondary school.
I have mentored newly qualified teachers and newly appointed heads of English.

My daughter is very happy with her tutor.
She looks forward to her weekly sessions.
Their was no pressure from Ruth and first session was free.
She did a trial session to get to know my daughter then left it with her to choose if she wanted to go back.
The fact my daughter looks forward to the following week speaks for itself.

Our son needed assistance with a November GCSE English Language re-take. The re-take was with a different Board and a different exam to the original GCSE. Ruth covered all the aspects of the new syllabus in order to prepare our son for the exam. In doing that she also gave him confidence that he could achieve this time around and gave him strategies to help him answer the different types of questions. Following the re-take our son asked to have some extra lessons with Ruth to help him with his writing of essays, presentations and briefings for his A levels. Our son is dyslexic and Ruth worked with him to find strategies that worked for him. Our son has always enjoyed his lessons with Ruth and rates her very highly as a tutor, he says she listens, explains really clearly and he enjoys her lessons and says they are really good. As a parent I have found Ruth very professional, understanding and with good empathy for our son. I have seen an improvement in the writing style of my sons A level essays and he now plans his answers- something he has never been prepared to do before but now sees the value of doing. Ruth is an excellent teacher and I would highly recommend her.

Ruth was an excellent tutor for my 16 year old son who needed some extra help with revision for his English GCSE exam. Ruth helped him understand how to answer the exam questions in a very effective manner. Well worth the rate paid. A top notch lady.

Ruth really helped to build my daughter`s confidence after not obtaining the grades that she wanted in her A-level English Language mock exam.
Ruth was very friendly and approachable and helped my daughter to improve her exam technique as well as concentrating on the areas in which she was less confident. As a result her grades improved and she obtained the results that she needed to study at Lancaster University.
Thank you Ruth.
