Information about Roberta

I am an enthusiastic and passionate teacher, with a long term experience both of tutoring and teaching in school environment. My success as a teacher is demonstrated by the fact that my students really enjoy my lessons and often pursue their science studies onto further education (mostly Physics, which is my long term passion and field of main expertise).

Availability: Mostly evening weekdays and weekends. On line tuition available too.

Willing to travel: Home Only

Experience: Before becoming a full time secondary school teacher, I have matured a long experience as a research scientist in the field of neuroscience - I obtained a PhD in Biophysics (International School of Advanced Studies, Trieste, Italy, 2000).I have been actively involved in cutting edge research on a variety of projects and working collaboratively both across departments at UCL (University College London) and outside academia. The results of my research have been published in high profile journals, presented at local and international conferences and successfully used as evidence to grant further funding to my research. After working for over a decade at UCL, I have maintained direct connections with the university environment and this enables me to facilitate students in their transition from secondary school to University by offering opportunities for extracurricular activities, laboratory visits and direct access to various aspects of the ongoing scientific research. Parallel to my passion for scientific research, I have always nurtured a passion for teaching and communicating science. After completing an inspiring teaching course at UCL (PGCLTHE, October 2007 - May 2008), I enrolled into a PCGE course (October 2008 – May 2010) in order to acquire the skills and knowledge necessary to teach and inspire secondary school pupils into science. In the first few years after achieving my teaching qualification I maintained both occupations on a part time basis, teaching mostly A-Level Physics in school (but also KS3 and KS4) while completing my research projects at UCL. As my passion and enthusiasm for teaching complements my drive and curiosity for learning, I pursued the PCGE further to Master level (October 2010 – September 2013). As a teacher, undertaking a MA Education gave me the unique opportunity to make explicit and challenge some of my assumptions on how students learn and, as a consequence of that, to modify my own practice and share it with colleagues within and outside the department. At the end of this journey, I became a better teacher and, importantly, my students became better learners. One of my strengths as a teacher is my use of assessment to inform teaching and the detailed and timely record of students’ progress that allows me to plan and deliver lessons that match students’ learning needs. For the second year now I have been working as specialist examiner for the OCR A-Level Physics board, developing further my understanding of the requirements that students need to fulfil to excel in their public examinations. My questioning skills during lesson also reflect my ability to assess students understanding and dissect out any misconception students may hold as timely and detailed is the feedback I provide students with to move their learning forward.
