Information about Claire

Qualified Teacher | Principal Examiner | Senior Moderator | NEA (coursework) Authenticator | Education Consultant | Enhanced DBS | >20 years experience | Oxbridge background.

As an (ex) Teacher, Head of Department and (current) Senior Examiner, I am a well-qualified, experienced and knowledgeable teacher and I`ve been tutoring privately for over 20 years. I work mainly with `other educated` students - that might be home educated families, but more commonly adult learners, professional athletes and footballers, actors, children in hospital, internationally-mobile HNWI, and other learners who, for whatever reason, do not attend school full time.

My educational background and qualifications are as follows:
- University of Cambridge, Master of Studies (MSt.). in Building History, 2021 – 2023 (current)
- University of Oxford, Advanced Undergraduate Diploma in Local History, 2020 - 2022 (current)
- Birkbeck, University of London, Master of Science (MSc.) in Education, Power and Social Change, 2016 – 2019 (Grade: Distinction)
- University of Oxford, Department for Continuing Education, Short course in Archaeology in Practice, 2016 – 2016
- National College for Leadership of Schools and Children’s Services, Leading from the Middle, 2010 – 2011 (Now renamed: National Professional Qualification for Middle Leadership (NPQML), and ran by the National College for Teaching and Leadership)
- University of Leicester, PGCE in Secondary (Geography) Teaching, 2003 – 2004
- University of Leicester, post graduate supplementary certificate in TESOL (Teaching English as a Secondary or Other Language), 2003-2004
- University of Leicester, Batchelor of Science (BSc.) in Geography, 2000-2003 (Grade 2:1 Hons)
- University of Leicester, Computer Science Supplementary course, 2000-2003 (Grade 1:1)
- Institute of Leadership and Management, Introductory Level 3 Certificate in First Line Management, 2001 – 2002

I have my own Education Consultancy Business, based in Cambridge, UK, but working with clients from across the world. Education Consultancy offers a wide range of educational services and products including:
- schooling and schools advice (UK and international schooling, private and state education)
- teacher training and workshops (schools and teacher training centres)
- student workshops
- one-to-one consultation (for school leaders and teachers)
- private tutoring and study skills
- development of learning materials and educational resources.
- coursework authentication for home-schooled/ re-sit candidates

Although I have left full-time teaching, I still stay very much involved with various educational institutions and charitable organisations. I am a Founding Director on the board for an International School in India, and a `parent host` for international students. I have participated in a number of education advisory committees (including in Westminster) and regularly advise businesses and parent groups on all aspects of education.

In 2020, following the cancellation of exams in the UK, I was asked by a nationwide assessment centre to act as an Assessor and Senior Moderator for their GCSE, iGCSE, AS and A-Level Centre Assessed Grades (CAGs). After receiving Ofqual/JCQ and CAIE approval, I managed the CAG allocation for a number of subjects at GCSE and A Level. I am also a Senior Moderator for Non-Examined Assessments (‘coursework’) for a number of independent assessment centres (again, multiple exam boards). In order to do this, each year I must pass the exam boards’ moderation process and my marks have never been changed by the exam boards. Therefore, I know what is needed in regard to assessment and exams, However, that is not why I teach, of course!

Despite my own learning disabilities, I have consistently achieved the highest grades in my education, from a collection of As and A*s at GCSE and A Level (many years ago now!) to grades of `Distinction` at university.

I live in Bedfordshire but work in both Cambridge and London during the week. I have two dogs and two cats, and enjoy volunteering in my local community.

In 2021-22, I am studying part time for another Master’s degree and therefore will only offer ‘blocks’ of tutoring, to be booked in advance, or the odd lesson here and there. If you are looking for a specialist teacher, with examiner experience, on an ad hoc basis, and want flexibility then look no further! However, if you’re looking for a general teacher, for example, to help your child with their homework every Thursday at 4pm, then I’m likely not the tutor for you.

Availability: I am available mostly in the daytime, with occasional evening slots.
Due to demand, I am no longer able to travel to the student’s home, unless in exceptional circumstances; this then allows me to offer my services to more students. However, I am available on certain days for face-to-face tutorials in central Cambridge and in central London.

A free initial session is offered for long-term clients ONLY; this provides an opportunity to meet face-to-face, discuss specific needs and expectations, and plan for the lessons ahead. It usually lasts around 20-30 minutes.

Willing to travel: 20 miles

Experience: Over 15 years teaching experience in schools, in the UK and abroad.
Successful results record (feel free to ask!) for IB Diploma, MYP, A-Level and GCSEs.

Subjects I have taught in schools include:
- IB Geography (HL), History (HL), Environmental Systems and Societies (SL)
- A Level Geography, History, English Literature, Politics
- GCSE (and iGCSE) Geography, History, English Language, English Literature, Maths, RE, Citizenship, Science

Qualified Teacher Status/ PGCE.
Additional Professional Qualifications for Leadership and Management, TESOL (Teaching English as a Secondary or Other Language) at postgraduate level, plus further qualifications for Teaching ESS (Environmental Science - IB) and Teaching History (IB).
Oxford and Cambridge Graduate (or I will be by 2023!)
I can also offer excellent advice for general Study Skills or coursework, having held Management Positions as SEN lead, Extended Essay Coordinator, Gifted and Talented Coordinator, etc. as well as an examiner.

I am able to offer NEA (coursework) authentication and supervision for A-Level Geography, History or English Literature.

Other recent work, experience and awards:

* Authenticator, Assessor and Senior Moderator: Following the cancellation of GCSE and A-Level exams, I was brought in to act as an Assessor and Senior Moderator for GCSE, iGCSE, AS and A-Level CAGs for a nationwide assessment centre; this project meant that around 5000 private candidates were able to receive grades.

* Project Manager and Lead Author: Working for a well-known publisher, I project managed the creation of 10 A-Level and 3 iGCSE online courses and textbooks. I subcontracted over 20 teachers/ authors and personally wrote content for the A-Level English Lit., History and iGCSE Business courses. I also edited A-Level Biology.

* Education Consultant: Involvement in a cross-party committee, discussing the role of independent education in the UK, which advises the government on policy.

* Workshop Leader: Running in-school and virtual workshops for teachers (INSET) and students.

* TES Teaching Awards: Shortlisted for ‘Most Creative School’ (with a team of 8-10 other teachers).

Claire is an amazing tutor/mentor. She’s professional, extremely well organised and inspirational. Also, she’s got a lovely, friendly personality, which makes her very approachable. Our son felt very comfortable and ‘at ease’ in her company, like he’s known her forever. Claire brings out the best in her tutees, as she motivates them and makes sure they are ready and well prepared for anything that comes their way. We were lucky to have her help.
