Information about Leon
I am a twenty-two-year-old mathematics student, currently studying my third year at the University of the West of England (UWE) with a keen interest in helping younger pupils achieve their academic potential. I am predominately looking to tutor students learning the GCSE syllabus, but would also be happy to take on A-level students depending on my educational commitments at the time. My philosophy is that all students can succeed and excel in mathematics when given the right tools and correct logic; hence the focus in my lessons is on establishing the most effective teaching technique for the learner and catering the experience specifically to improve their approach to problems. As has been echoed in my previous experiences, I consider myself a very friendly, approachable individual with a natural aptitude for communicating constructively with younger pupils.
Availability: I am currently available for tutoring from 9 am to 9 pm, Monday-Saturday. Having just finished my placement year, I have no commitments for the remaining summer months (until late September/early October) aside from a part-time job that I work on a Sunday. I also recognise that for some students evenings are the only option, so I want to take this into consideration. From October onwards, I will reduce my availability to weekday evenings due to university commitments.
Willing to travel: 5 miles
Experience: During my second year at UWE, I was a PAL (Peer Assisted Learner) leader, which is a programme organised by the university that consists of teaching material to both first-year mathematics students and students on other courses with a mathematical component. Similarly, I was a peer mentor during Post-16 at my school which meant I taught GCSE maths to pupils after school for two years. Both experiences highlighted my aptitude for teaching and opened my eyes to the reality that a different perspective is often the only thing needed to understand a concept in totality. I also volunteered as a `Buddy` at a primary school in Montpelier to help younger children with their reading and numeracy. This proved to be a very fulfilling experience; it became apparent that they clearly benefited from sessions with me and since I have felt inspired to provide others with educational aid.
