Information about Paul

I am an English teacher of thirteen years’ experience who holds degrees from the universities of Sussex, London and Kent, as well as a Postgraduate Certificate in Secondary Education. In addition to teaching, I am an active researcher and academic writer, with specialisms in modernist literature, 19th-century realism, and existentialist philosophy. I write regular online articles on George Orwell, the subject of my thesis, and am currently seeking publication of my first book, which explores existentialist motifs in his writing. As well as English, I offer tuition in essay writing, and all branches of philosophy. Although I conduct the majority of lessons from my home or over Skype, I do travel to tutees in the Horsham and Dorking areas.

As a doctoral tutor, I offer a premium service, drawing upon my own extensive academic skills and experience to give help that is tailored to the student`s specific needs. I make a point of adapting not only the content, but also my teaching method to fit the learning style and personality of the individual, avoiding a ‘one-size-fits-all’ approach. The tutorials I offer are friendly and supportive, with a real emphasis placed upon aspiration: I want my students to aim for - and achieve - the highest possible grades. I have many years’ experience setting and marking English coursework, particularly for AQA, and draw upon this to quickly identify areas for improvement in a student’s work. My tutorials are designed to not only convey information clearly and in an easily-digestible form, but to provide structured opportunities for the learner to incrementally improve their skills. In addition to the lesson, I provide free email support to parents of my tutees, drawing upon my experience as a teacher to answer any queries relating to schoolwork or examinations. I offer a 50 percent discount on the first lesson, and reduced rates for groups of two or more students. Please email me to book a slot, or for a friendly discussion of your requirements.

Availability: I am available for tuition from 1pm until 9pm, every day of the week. Please email me to book a slot.

Experience: I have thirteen years` experience as an educator, having taught English in an outstanding secondary school since 2003. During that time, I have helped thousands of pupils spanning the full range of abilities, and have consistently achieved exceptional `value-added` results for my classes. In addition to working with larger groups, I have also offered regular one-to-one tuition sessions, and I take pride in never having had a pupil achieve lower than a C for GCSE English or English Literature. Indeed, the vast majority of my students achieve As and A*s, irrespective of their level of attainment when they first arrive under my supervision. My teaching has been repeatedly graded as ‘outstanding’, and the bespoke resources I produce in order to support students are of a professional quality.
