Information about Karen

I am a supportive, PGCE qualified, student focused tutor with over 25 years’ experience of working with a variety of age groups with GCSE`s, KS3 (year 9 and above), and English as a additional language. Each session is tailored to the individual needs of each student as I feel it is important to treat everyone as individuals. My sessions are structured and relaxed, allowing plenty of opportunity to discuss, laugh and ask questions. My approach is to use techniques to engage with students to show them how they can develop using their strengths, to listen effectively to what students say and provide positive feedback to enable students to develop at their own pace mastering techniques that they adopt, to enhance their written, spoken or comprehension of English language and literature .

Availability: Thursday: 5.40 - 6.40 PM & 6.50 - 7.50 PM

I am available both online and in-person, based in Cumbria. I also work during half-term (and are available during the day) and will have some evening slots available during half-term week as some students take a break during the holidays.
I am available after school and in the evenings, as well as during the day to help students who are unable to attend school (following the pandemic, I am seeing more students who are unable to attend school due to confidence and anxiety constraints), or are on study leave, and for adults who wish to study while the home is quiet or during their working day.

I am also available to help on-line using ZOOM for GCSE (year 9 and above), resit support, and for adults who would like help with English, business English, or if English is not your first language.
Please check my current availability and get in touch and we can discuss how I can help with your specific requirements.

I look forward to hearing from you, Karen

Experience: I have for the last 10 years been successfully tutoring students with English to achieve GCSE English Language and Literature qualifications working with a variety of awarding bodies and various specifications including AQA, Edexcel and Eduqas. I have supported students with a variety of learning difficulties and needs: Dyslexia, ADHD, Dyspraxia and personal confidence and self-esteem support.

I am also tutoring students with English as a second language (EAL) and have previously tutored students to take the Cambridge First Certificate qualifications.

For a number of years, I lived in France and taught English upon the Baccalaureate, in a French High school. During school holidays I devised individual English immersion programmes and tutored French students in my own home.

Here in the UK I lectured for many years in Management specialising in communication and personal development on undergraduate University programmes and are a Fellow with the Institute of Personnel and Development. I have devised, taught, assessed and tutored upon further education programmes in management, leadership, Personnel and Development, Business Start-up programmes, and dissertation and extended projects.

Good tutor understands pupils needs and works with them to achieve goals

Tutors Response :

I think this feedback has been attached to the wrong tutor and needs removing as I have not been tutoring any student by this name.

My daughter has now had several tutoring sessions with Karen. Over this short time her confidence in her own ability is developing well as is her subject knowledge. Karen has formed a good relationship with her also taking an interest in her life outside `English`. Karen, is; patient, gives her time to think, gives her postive feedback, always checks she understand things being discussed in an encouraging manner, allows her time to reconsider ideas and gives her helpful sheets that help to scaffold her understanding. Karen herself is very postiive and engaging. My daughter does find this subject tricky and Karen is doing a fantastic job at opening it up for her . Thanks Karen.

Tutors Response :

Thank you Jackie for you lovely feedback, I am so pleased that your daughter is feeling more confident with this subject, which I can see each week as she engages more and more with both me and the lesson content. I feel sure that by the time she comes to take her exams she will find the subject easier to apply to the GCSE papers. Many thanks Karen
