Information about Beverly

I qualified as a teacher in 1975 and have had experience in both Primary and Secondary teaching although for the past 12 years I have only taught English at Secondary/GCSE level.

I attended The University of London , Goldsmiths College, and I hold a Batchelo of Educattion Hons degree, Diploma in English and Education, Cert.Ed and other in-service qualifications. I have also worked towards my MA in Literature but have not yet completed the course.
I have experience of teaching children with a variety of needs and abilities, and believe that good lessons depend on good subject knowledge and thorough planning.
I am very adept at developing student`s essay-writing skills.

Although I have been teaching in the Secondary phase for many years, my primary practice knowledge still prevails and I am fully aware that important as Secondary teaching is, it is the Primary stage which needs a different kind of care. It is the stage at which the foundation of learning is established and if the understanding of skills and knowledge are insecure or forced on the child then the ability to absorb and understand later knowledge will be impeded. Therefore I take great care with my primary practice planning and ensure that there are appropriate and effective teaching materials which can be utilised and manipulated at every stage , to enhance full understanding of a body of knowledge.

I have held a variety of posts in the Development of Literacy including eight years as an Advisory Teacher as a member of a team whose sole purpose was to raise achievement across a large London Borough. Once the needs of the pupils were recognised we individually and as a team designed resources to address those needs. Creating resources to meet the specific needs of individual pupils is still a skill that I practice, to achieve pupil success.

Availability: Available from Autumn term 2014. Lessons are delivered in my own home after parents and pupil have visited and viewed the learning environment. Once learning needs are established ,targets are set and progress monitored.
I am willing and able to teach students from age 7 to 16, and adults who require help with the grammatical restructuring of academic essays, letter-writing, statements, form-filling or developing reading skills.

Willing to travel: Home Only

Experience: I have worked as an Advisory teacher for 10 years, held various positions of responsibility including that of Reading Recovery teacher and Drama and Library co-ordinator to name but a few, and I held the position of Head of English department/KS3 specialist for 1 year.
I have worked mainly in inner city schools in London and have encountered students of all abilities. My forte lies in developing strategies and resources to meet the needs of all my students in all areas of English.
I am skilled in developing students reading and comprehension skills through using a variety of teaching strategies and materials.
As a published author, encouraging and enthusing children to develop their writing skills is also one of the areas in which I have had great success. This service is offered to adults and children alike.
