Information about Naomi
I am a fourth year graduate medicine student in London. Prior to this, I studied Classics at the University of Cambridge, in my second year combining the subject with Education. I have always been interested in teaching and I appreciated the opportunity to ground this interest in theory, especially to gain an insight into the psychology of learning and child development. As a student of both the arts and sciences, I can offer tuition in a wide range of subjects, including Latin and Ancient Greek (up to A2 level as well as Common Entrance preparation), Biology and Chemistry (up to AS level), English Language and Literature (up to GCSE level), 11+ preparation in all aspects (Maths, English, verbal and non verbal reasoning), and German (up to GCSE level). I am additionally always keen to provide support with medicine university applications, including personal statement help and interview practice.
Tutoring is important to me because I see the transformative change that occurs when an individual is nurtured, on a one-to-one basis, in their study of a subject. I observe students becoming more confident with their learning, and their enjoyment for their studies increasing. I like to think that at the heart of my tutoring sessions is a fresh discovery of the joy in learning, which I know all too well can sometimes fade under the weight of school expectation and examinations.
My tutoring style is of course dependent on subject and age of student, and always tailored to the need of the individual. I like to hold a non-committal first session, in which I can get a sense of the students strengths and areas requiring improvement, and to ensure that the decision whether to meet for further sessions or not is a relaxed, collaborative decision between student, parent(s) and myself.
- For science subjects I tend to start from what the student knows about a topic and build on that using a variety of resources and regular questioning to test understanding. In terms of explaining concepts, I always take the students learning style into account - e.g. if they are a more visual learner, my explanations will often be delivered through mind maps and diagrams.
- For language subjects, including English, I help the student to become well-rounded in their proficiency of all aspects - to have a solid mastery of underlying grammatical structures, to express themselves accurately, creatively and with originality, and, at a more advanced level, to produce nuanced interpretations of set literature works.
- When preparing for exams, thorough use of past papers and practising of exam technique is paramount to success.

Willing to travel: 15 miles
Experience: My one-to-one tuition experience, totalling over 300 hours, lies in Latin (at all levels), AS Chemistry, GCSE Biology and Chemistry, Primary English, and all components of the 11+. I have also been involved in running a lunchtime Latin club for Year 6 children and volunteered with a charity partnered with underprivileged schools, where I worked with a Year 7 student to boost their confidence in reading and grammar.
During my time at medical school thus far, I have volunteered as an academic mentor to a group of first year medical students, which involved running weekly tutorials on topics they were finding difficult, and worked with the student-run intervention Open Minds, planning and co-leading workshops to secondary school pupils on a range of different mental health topics.
