Information about James
Hello, my name is James and I have recently finished my PhD in film theory at the University of Reading. I have lots of teaching experience, ranging from students preparing for their A-Levels to final year undergraduates. I really enjoy mentoring students and helping them to realise their goals. As a teacher and lecturer I am responsible for mentoring students so that they develop their critical thinking and analytical skills. I have particular skills in writing, especially with regards to structure and argumentation. I have experience of tutoring students in a variety of humanities subjects.
A little about my academic work: My PhD analyses the production and reception of certain aspects of media culture. I teach undergraduates film theory on a Film and Theatre BA and I have worked as a tutor with young offenders. I also teach prisoners at Holloway Prison. I have co-edited The Journal of Media Practice, co-organised a postgraduate conference and I have had my own work published.
Academic achievement: I achieved a 1st class undergraduate degree and a distinction for my Masters. I was awarded the Andrew Britton Prize for the best degree result in film studies on the BA course. I was also nominated for the University’s PhD Researcher of the Year award.
As well as my academic career, I also work as a freelance filmmaker. I have produced material for a wide range of clients, including Oxfordshire County Council, The National Citizen Service Programme, BBC Radio 6 Music, Reading Museum and the Arcola Theatre, as well as making documentary shorts, promos and live event recordings.
Availability: Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesday afternoons and Sundays.
Willing to travel: 10 miles
Experience: I recently obtained a PhD in film theory from the University of Reading (I also received a 1st class degree for my BA and a distinction for my Masters). I have experience of teaching students from 16 years old through to final year undergraduate candidates. I mentor students with specific learning needs, including dyslexia. My background gives me a solid grounding in the humanities (and especially English) and I have a particular strength in essay writing and argumentation.
