Information about Florence

I graduated from the University of Cambridge in June 2015 with a first class degree in English Literature.

I am a private tutor providing academic support for students of all ages. I specialise in teaching EFL, all papers of the 11+, and Oxbridge admissions and interview practise. I am able to teach most subjects to GCSE, and Geography, Biology, and Art to A-Level. I teach English Language and Literature at all levels.

I have experience working with SEN students and adult learners.

I enjoy mentoring positions, and am happy to run debating and public speaking workshops, creative sessions, and art classes.

It is my hope as a tutor to give students the confidence to push their ideas further. I will work with past papers, homework, and my own resources, but ultimately each of my tutoring sessions will be tailored to the individual to ensure that the student does not only achieve their grades, but develops interest and excitement in their own intellect and potential. I like to make my lessons engaging and enjoyable and I incorporate the interests of the student wherever possible. I have found, as both student and tutor, that self-confidence is the key to unlocking promise, academic and otherwise, and I make achieving this a priority with my students.

I have worked in both public and commercial galleries in Kuala Lumpur and the UK, and founded a visual arts agency. For the last seven months I have been in South America learning Spanish and working freelance for various galleries, installations, and individuals.

Please do not hesitate to be in touch if you would like my CV, examples of recent students, or any further information.

Experience: I have been a private tutor for over four years. I have taught students of all ages – from four to forty – and of all abilities. As well as tutoring individuals, I have taught in residential positions in China (2013) and Hong Kong (2014), where I was appointed Camp Director. In this position I was responsible for the curriculum and education of over five hundred students.

Recent clients:

I have tutored a number of students for all papers of the 11+. With one student I focused on the verbal, in which she lacked confidence and reasoning ability. She was successful in achieving a top score, and was offered a place at the most selective school in her area.

I tutored a brother and sister duo (11 y/o & 14 y/o) whose first language was Mandarin. Though they had lived in the UK for a number of years, they both struggled with English and English literacy. I worked on building up confidence with reading, and encouraging an enjoyment of it. The girl had dyslexia, and I created lessons that never made this an obstacle, but instead an opportunity for a more exciting kind of lesson. The sessions were very successful, with both children widening their vocabulary substantially and being considerably more able to express themselves. The girl’s reading age increased by 3 years.

I have recently ben tutoring Geography GCSE, and am pleased at the progress being made.

I have tutored EFL to a number of adults. I tutored a month of intensive business English to a German man. I tutored a French Canadian former professional tennis player who was starting a job in live TV tennis commentary. I worked on building up fluidity as well as fluency. She has since been offered higher profile matches.

I tutored English to a Durham University student who struggled with literary analysis and essay writing. I structured the sessions like Cambridge supervisions, with discussion based analysis. We worked on a strategy for creating clear, intelligent essays.

I tutored an autistic student in Beijing (10 y/o), helping with his school subjects. He struggled with concentration and connecting and applying information. I focused on letting his interests direct our sessions so that he continued to stay engaged, and developed a curriculum that was flexible and responded to the student’s behaviour, without letting it dictate the lesson. I created a clear plan, with achievable goals, which built his confidence in his own ability. We developed learning/behaviour strategies for when he was struggling. By the end of our sessions he was a happier, more capable student, who was able to express his opinions with confidence.

I regularly return to my secondary school to run practise Oxbridge interviews and guide students through the challenging application process, as well as encouraging them to think outside of the parameters that others impose upon them.

I have taught art classes for primary school students.

During my residential placements in China and Hong Kong it was my objectives to focus on the individual, guiding each student to challenge, develop, and articulate their own thought process and beliefs. I started debating workshops, and was delighted to see the impact they had on the behaviour of the children in class: they were increasingly articulate, confident, and questioning, all of which fed into their writing style as well. The skills that I cultivated provide a major advantage when trying to understand a curriculum, and prove ones worth when applying to a top end university, who look not just at what an applicant knows, but how they think.
