Information about Hugo

I`m a 31 year old young professional educated at Wellington College and Durham University, who has spent six years at Ernst & Young as a Management Consultant. I`ve escaped the City to enter the entrepreneurial world and am excited at the prospect of combining this with tutoring, as my long term plan is to become a teacher. I believe the following attributes make me a good tutor:

- Young, enthusiastic and dedicated
- Driven and successful within academia and beyond
- Well-rounded and complete with a sense of humour (always read the label) which, in my experience, is the difference between a good and bad lesson
- Keenly aware of the need to build a rapport with each child so they enjoy, rather than dread, their tutoring
- Focused on development: my ethos is one of continual improvement in all walks of life and this only comes with hard work
- Focused on maths: This has always been my favourite subject area meaning my time and energy is not diluted over a range of subjects. Awarded Astar at GCSE, A at A-level and studied statistics as part of my Psychology & Philosophy degree.
- Run a childcare agency and work as a school governor so understand the wants & needs of children
- Can offer a flexible schedule, available during term time and the holidays
- Obviously more than happy to have a chat on the phone before starting anything to understand what`s required and what you believe works best for your child.

Education

- Wellington College, Berks, 1998-2003 (Head of College 2002/3)
- Won top academic scholarship to Wellington College, 1998
- GCSEs, 2001: 5 Astar, 6 A grades
- A-levels, 2003: Maths (A), English Literature (A), Physics (A). No Astar available in those days!
- Upper second class degree (2.1) in Psychology & Philosophy (BA), University of Durham, 2007

During that time I have worked with the clients in the power & utilities, healthcare, financial services and central government sectors.

Experience: Currently tutoring Key Stage 2 maths to a 9 year old boy at school at Thomas`s Battersea and based in Sloane Square.

Currently tutoring GCSE maths to a 14 year-old girl at school at Francis Holland and based in Sloane Square.

Currently tutoring GCSE maths to a 15 year-old boy in Shepherd’s Bush twice a week.

Currently tutoring maths to a 12 year-old dyspraxic girl in Esher once a week.

Currently tutor an 8 year-old girl at Finton House School, and 12 & 13 year-old boys (with special needs) from Canbury School on an ad hoc basis across a range of subjects. I also look after the children on an informal basis too.

Just ask if you`d like to talk to any of the families I tutor for so they can give you a reference over the phone and explain my style. I enjoy incorporating some kind of half-time game to break up the hour and ensure the children look forward to maths, rather than dread it!

I have provided academic tutoring to my younger brother (3 years below me graduated with a 2.1 from Oxford University) and supported a university student (in the academic year below me) through the mathematical side of his university degree, in an informal mentoring role.

Whilst at Ernst & Young, I managed and mentored teams of Graduates and Senior Consultants through complex projects. A large proportion of our work in cost reduction involved financial and analytical problem solving, which invariably involved supporting people with the mathematical aspects of these problems.

I have included some references below from mothers of which I have signed copies:

1. "Hugo has been tutoring my 9 year old son in maths for the last 6 months every week, and we are extremely happy with the way it has turned out.
Before Hugo, my son had a couple of tutors but was wholly unenthusiastic and it was very hard to make him even sit down and behave let alone study maths. Since Hugo, he has been enthusiastic and is even looking forward to his lesson. He has made leaps and bounds of progress because he enjoys the lesson and because Hugo makes it fun.

My son is extremely sporty and so Hugo has introduced a 5-minute game of catching ball to break up the lesson and my son just loves this. It is quite a competitive game between them which always makes me laugh. The best thing is that Toby can relate to Hugo and and I can see that he is getting a lot from the lesson.

Hugo’s style of tutoring is to question my son as to why he came up with a particular answer to make sure, where applicable, that he understands the issue rather than being able to regurgitate a specific rule. All this means that my son now looks forward to maths lessons rather than dreading them like he used to with previous tutors.

Hugo is organised and flexible. He sent us a plan at the start of the term that included my son’s knowledge gaps, an individual lesson plan, resource suggestions for practicing maths in his own time, and a weekly plan showing which topics the boys were going to cover on a week by week basis – based on my son’s specific syllabus. Hugo is always willing to flex the days and times he works, and often stays longer than an hour to ensure the topic is covered in full, catching practice is completed and we, as parents, are updated.

Hugo’s work has led to my son to enjoy maths, being told he no longer needs to attend after-school maths club (as he finds it too easy) and climbing from the bottom to the middle maths set at school. I would therefore highly recommend Hugo as a tutor to other families as we think he is fantastic."

2. "We have used Hugo for ad hoc childcare and also tutoring for our 3 children. He comes highly recommended.

Our 2 oldest children have special needs. Oscar aged 13 years has a degenerative brain condition and Felix aged 12 is Autistic. We also have a daughter, Lily aged 8. Hugo has been fantastic with the children. He is very understanding and sensitive to the boys’ needs. They adore having him around. Hugo is happy to muck in and entertain the children. Lily is especially fond of Hugo, and he connects really well with her.

Hugo has tutored all 3 children, which is no mean feat! They all enjoy ‘school work’ with Hugo, and he has the knack of making it seem an utter pleasure for them. He is reliable, adaptable and most importantly to our family, down to earth!

Hugo is a pleasure to have around helping with the kids. We really rate him!"

3. “Hugo has been tutoring my daughter Izzy for 3 months in maths. Izzy has historically been very resistant to having extra tuition of any sort and it has been wonderful that she never minds having her maths session with Hugo, she even looks forward to it now! He has a great way with children, making them feel relaxed and at ease. He has been reinforcing the maths that Izzy is being taught at school, focussing on the areas she finds most difficult. Her confidence is building as a result and I feel very reassured that she is getting great support and encouragement from Hugo. I would highly recommend him to any of my friends as a maths tutor.”

5/5 Rating

I parachuted Hugo in for a few emergency Maths GCSE revision lessons for my son just before his exams.
He proved to be reliable, patient and charming with my son, and very confident with his subject.
I would definitely book him again next year and I really would recommend him to other families.
