Information about Mary

Friendly and approachable, I specialise in teaching KS3 English, GCSE English and GCSE English Literature. I teach from home in the centre of Ashford, Kent, where I live with my husband, three younger children (born 2000, 2002 and 2009) and my dog, Sally. I have off-road parking.

*I am thrilled to have received the following feedback from a student, who told me originally he just wanted to pass with a 4/5: `I wanted to say a very big thank you. your tuition helped me to get results above my expectation. You really helped me with my confidence in the subject. I got a 7 in literature I did a lot better than I wished for.`

I’m a qualified English teacher with a degree in English Language and Linguistics. I have 18 years` experience teaching English and History both 1:1 and to small groups. Most of my current work is 1:1, supporting what the student is studying in school, but I also teach day-time courses for small groups of home-educated children. Courses on offer for home-educated children are: CIE iGCSE First Language English, AQA GCSE English Literature and book clubs. I host TEFL immersion courses in the summer. A veteran home-educator, I have experience teaching English from early reading up to GCSE level and have been delighted with excellent results.Three of my own children have graduated from home-school to 6th form, so I`d be happy to guide you through the process of entering exams from home and can give advice on exam centres.

At the moment I am teaching several students who are aiming at the top GCSE grades and am giving guidance on how to achieve that.
I have an enhanced DBS check.

Availability: Thursdays 5.30pm-6.30pm

After School

Willing to travel: Home Only

Experience: All lessons are tailored to the individual and I encourage my students to take ownership of their learning, progressively developing study skills. It has been very rewarding to see some of my new students improve their monitoring grades after only a few lessons.

Most students need help with building vocabulary, punctuation and grammar. My usual approach is to take one point of punctuation or grammar per week and then keep revising it as we go along. I tend to do this at the beginning of the lesson and then move on to a reading or writing exercise.

Although most students I teach are in school, preparing for exams, I am also happy to teach students who want to study a book or need more general help with their English.

It is my policy to update parents regularly by email of what I`ve been covering in lessons.

Lessons are booked and paid for half-termly by cash or bank transfer. Email receipts are always sent. I require 48 hours` notice to cancel a lesson, to enable me to offer the slot to another student.
