Information about Bradley

Hello! My name is Bradley and I have recently completed a civil engineering degree at the University of Bath. My decision to study civil engineering follow on from my strengths in school in maths and physics and interests in building and infrastructure, achieving 6 A*s at GCSE including maths & physics and a 7 (A* A-level equivalent) in Spanish for IB. I am also a socially-minded person who believes in the importance of empathy in communication, and I believe that teaching is no exception. Also, having had to manage a learning disability during school has taught me how important it is for a teacher to understand the perspective of the learner when explaining a concept.

During sessions, I break my teaching process down into the following 5 stages: Identifying the gap in knowledge: as a strong believer in High Intensity Retrieval (HIR), I focus each session on honing on the gap in knowledge that the student wants or needs to know about by asking a few questions about the concept at the start. Alternatively, I teach the concept as a whole if appropriate. Next I describe and/or explain new knowledge or understanding which targets this gap. Afterwards I aim to help the student make sense of the concept by providing a few questions relating to the concept. Following this, I ask questions warranting more complex answers covering the depth of detail of the concept. Finally, I help to apply these stages of learning to an exam style question in preparation for assessment.

Experience: I have a brother currently at secondary school whom I am currently supporting for his GCSEs. Tutoring him, particularly in topics I remember from school, in the past has helped me gain useful experience for teaching students and benefit from reflecting on my experiences of being taught at school. During my time at university I also used my ability to understand and explain concepts to help fellow engineering coursemates of mine understand underlying principles behind mathematical or physics-related concepts, expanding the scope of personalities to whom I have experience explaining concepts.
