Information about Talha
I have been a student of the Arabic language for over 20 years.
In 2004 I graduated with a First in BA Arabic from the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS) in London.
I lived two years in Damascus studying both at the University of Damascus and privately with local teachers. I have studied classical texts of grammar, such as Al-Ajrumiya, Qatr al-Nada and Alfiyat Ibn Malik, as well as works on rhetoric, poetry and prosody.
In 2005 I successfully passed my CELTA.
I have been a writer and translator of literary works for over 20 years.
In 2012 the Koestler Trust awarded me the Leopold de Rothschild Charitable Trust Platinum Award for my poem "Grieving" and a further prize for the collection from which it came from.
In 2014 the University of Turin published a selection of my poetry translated into Italian accompanied with an essay about my career by Professor Pietro Deandrea.
I am currently a first year PhD student in history at SOAS looking at medieval Arabic and Persian sources.
Availability: I am happy to teach small groups (no more than four) for both Arabic and English as a Foreign Language.
An introductory online session is at no charge.
Tutees are expected to cover travel costs.
Outside of lessons I am available to my tutees via phone, email, SMS, Skype and Whatsapp.
Willing to travel: 50 miles
Experience: I taught prisoners at HMP Belmarsh and HMP Long Lartin in classes for English as a Foreign Language, basic literacy and maths between 2006 through 2012. In 2008 I completed the Community Learning Champions Programme run by Lewisham College to become a mentor for those with no formal education.
Since then I have tutored students from SOAS, University of Westminster as well as individual adult learners.
I have experience with the Edexcel GCSE and A-level Arabic curriculum.
I have taught English using the Callan method to Spanish-speaking and Portuguese-speaking students.
In 2015 I was requested by the Ibn Jabal institute to teach the poetry and media Arabic modules for their pilot year long programme. I covered poetry both religious and secular, as well as contemporary writings on art criticism and scientific research. The programme culminated with students giving a presentation on a subject of their choice all in Arabic and fielding questions from fellow students.
I was the in-house tutor to a partner at a leading city law firm. I have had corporate clients in advertising and finance.
Here is what tutees said on another site:
"Talha has a great approach to teaching Arabic and in one hour I learnt more than in the previous 18 months. Really excited about what the next few weeks have in store...." (Ameet)
"Talha possesses all the attributes to be a truly sound and excellent tutor. My son continues to benefit tremendously from his lessons with Talha. The lessons are enhancing his knowledge of Arabic and he is steadily gaining more confidence in the subject." (Zeenat)
"Great teacher, quickly tailors lessons to your learning style. Making a lot of progress quickly!" (Frank)
"I am very happy with Talha. He really took the time to understand my (very specific) requests as I already speak the language but need a mish mash of grammar and reading practice. He found relevant material and devised a decent programme. As for logistics, it`s going swimmingly (he`s always on time -even early and was happy to meet me somewhere convenient). Recommend!" (Abi)
"Me and my husband have had a few Arabic language lessons with Talha. They have been really brilliant. He is a very patient teacher, he explains the work clearly and gives us ideas as to how to improve where we struggle and most importantly he recognises our strengths and praises us. We really enjoy our sessions and look forward to them. Would highly recommend Talha as a tutor." (Shorboona)
"Excellent tutor who is constantly considering what might be the most useful way for his tutee to learn and what will be the most useful resources for them. As well as clarifying problems I was having with the Arabic language he also pushed me forward into new areas of understanding." (Rosamund)
"A has greatly enjoyed her lessons with you - she has appreciated your punctuality also your patience with explanations and your pro-activeness in encouraging her to make notes during the sessions. the lessons are enjoyable and your technique of breaking things down to make them easy to understand has helped instill confidence." (Amina)
Feedback For Talha (2)
Upon meeting with my daughter and discussing her needs for over an hour, Talha decided she didn`t really need a tutor right now. We were satisfied with his decision and found him to be a competent and reliable tutor and would have been more than happy to hire him.
Talha has a very systematic and enthusiastic approach towards teaching Arabic. He makes the experience better by explaining in a very creative and patient manner. He even stays a little longer to ensure that the student has understood the topic. Would recommend!
