Information about Holly

Hello there! I`m Holly, Astrophysics graduate with a 1st class Masters Degree from The University of Glasgow. I`ve been a full time tutor both online and in person since 2019 and have been tutoring part time for 9+ years.

The subjects I tutor are Physics, Maths and Chemistry.
Physics and Maths I tutor all levels from KS3 to A level and occasionally the 1st year of university.
I tutor Chemistry up to GCSE level.

I genuinely care about each and every one of my students succeeding, to this end I am more than happy to provide notes of what we spoke about during our session, as well as some questions to try if required. I also find it helpful for parents/guardians to have a general idea of the subjects covered as well as how their child is progressing so, after each session I provide a summary email detailing what we did in the session, what the student did well on and what could be improved.

When tutoring I there is no fixed structure to the way I run my sessions as I have found everyone learns differently. I myself understand this very well as I have been diagnosed with dyslexia and ADHD.

One thing I have noticed, is that no matter how good the intentions of the student are, there will come a time where they simply cannot carry on concentrating though fatigue. Recognising this moment is important! If this is during our session, without making a big deal of it, I try to encourage the student to have a quick chat on a completely different topic or change my teaching style to help shift the focus and get the lesson back on track. If the student struggles revising in their own time I am always happy to offer advice and strategies that may work for them.

Experience: The Short version:
Since 2019 I have been a full time tutor.
Before that I was tutoring on and off on a part time basis, for the last 9+ years.

The Long Version:
I first started tutoring when taking my A-levels. Due to some unfortunate circumstances our maths department was severely understaffed with only 1 teacher to 90 A-level Maths students. To ensure everyone got the support they needed I, as a further maths student, helped out with teaching as well as going from class to class to answer any questions the teacher did not have time to deal with.

Once in University I became a regular private tutor teaching Maths, Physics, Chemistry, Astronomy and occasionally Programming and Biology. My students at the time ranged in age from 13 to 17. As a summer project I re-wrote our introduction to MATLAB programming course to improve and update it for the next years students. This was meant to undergo a review and be released 6 months later, but it was decided to release it immediately as the lectures found it magnitudes more useful than their current notes.

Upon graduating I found myself starting a PhD at the Max Plank Institute for Solar System Science, during my time here I taught a tutorial homework group for a group of 18 Masters students taking the course "Introduction to Astrophysics". During this time I worked extra hours with two members of the group who were far behind as they had entered the Masters program from a different degree. With a lot of work and support they both manged to pass their exams.
Ultimately after 18 months I decided the full time Academic life was not for me, I do not regret my decision as I have never been happier. Since leaving my PhD I have volunteered with The Dolphin Research Project in Montenegro and fulfilled a life long dream of becoming a Climbing instructor. Now, after riding my Motorbike to Mongolia from London and back, I am a semi-regular speaker at travel events where I do my best to share my experience of putting yourself out there and achieving whatever it is you set out to do! I love being a full time tutor and wouldn`t change it for the world.

I can`t thank tutor hunt enough for helping me find Holly! I found the site and did a search and selected Holly from quite a few tutors. My daughter was nervous about having a tutor and said she`d prefer one online rather than in person, Holly mentioned her astronomy background on her bio so this swung it with my daughter who had just started showing an interest in the moon/stars. My daughters been doing maths with her for the last year and a half or so and I recently increased her weekly lesson to twice a week to include science. Holly`s very good at communicating and Hope finds her way of working a very positive experience, I think it`s helping a lot in trying to help her understand certain things that school have either missed or failed to go over enough.....she is also helping her understand the way questions are worded on exam papers which isn`t something they cover enough in class. I would highly recommend Holly to another parent 5* experience.

Holly has been tutoring our son for physics and maths at A level, she is helping him understand the concepts more and gain confidence in all areas. Holly has an outstanding dedication and cares about her students success and wellbeing. Her knowledge and expertise is second to none and she has the unique ability to explain complex topics in a simpler form. She provides very helpful feedback after each session. We have seen big improvements in our sons grades and would highly recommend Holly as a tutor. We have been very lucky to find her! Many thanks Joanne

My daughter has been enjoying and finding Holly`s lessons very useful so far. She is able to help her understand the physics content well and has always sent very good question and notes resources that have been really useful for my daughter.
