Information about Derek
The most important factor in choosing a tutor is whether the tutor can develop a rapport with your child. Just because a tutor has worked wonders with a friends offspring doesnt mean they will be able to do the same for yours.
After a life time in teaching I believe that I have the ability to quickly develop a rapport with any pupil that requires that extra support. I am able to plan individual pathways to achieve agreed goals - whether it is over a period of years, months or even weeks.
My experience has covered:
- support for underachieving pupils from the age of 6
- long term and short term tuition in preparation for both 11+ state grammar school exams and independent school entrance exams
- modelling of interviews that may follow entrance exams
- continued support after the 11+ and entrance exams in preparation for life at the new school
- support for children with specific learning needs including dyslexia, dyscalculia, ADHD and autism
- maths tuition up to GCSE Foundation Level

Feedback For Derek (10)
Derek has recently started tutoring my son and he is very good with explaining things to him. He is a relaxed and professional gentleman, and im so pleased we found him to help my son reach his goals.
My daughter is currently taking lessons with Derek ,he is preparing her for the 11 plus exams for the next year. She really likes the lessons. It is too early to leave more comments at this stage. Thank you so much Derek. We always look forward to the next lesson.
My son has only had one session with Derek but Derek very quickly determined the help my son needed. My son thoroughly enjoyed his first session - having been very apprehensive - and is looking forward to Derek returning this week.
Derek provided excellent 1:1 tutoring for my son to prepare him for two different sets of 11+ exams. With his background and experience of teaching I found that he was perfectly placed to provide my son with the skills required to sit these different exams.
My son successfully qualified for his first choice grammar school but most important of all, Dereks teaching style resulted in a boost of my sons confidence in his own abilities.
Derek has started to teach my daughter recently, he is a very experienced teacher with a great teaching style. I hope my daughter is going to benefit a lot from Derek support and teaching.
Superb tutor with great experience and ability to adapt teaching style to suit your child. He has a great deal of patience and a very calm and positive disposition.
The teaching is working alongside how my son is being taught at school, of which the teachers appreciate and means my son can go back into school confident and not confused! Thoroughly recommend and have already! Book him in before he gets booked up!
A great tutor. Prepared my eldest son for his 11+ And tutored my then year 2 son. At the time my youngest son had lost confidence in his ability which Derek helped to build back up. We were all disappointed when he relocated and are struggling to find anyone to fill his shoes.
Really pleased with the Tutor`s approach. Excellent connection with the child. Early days, but so far so good. Thank you!
Derek is an excellent tutor. My daughter looks forward to her lessons. I am pleased with her progress and have seen an improvement in her abilities. Derek provides materials and gives homework.
Derek has provided a clear and concise "roadmap" that outlines a constructive way forward for our daughter. Lucy is dis-engaged with school and has lost her way, Derek has recognised this and shows a keen interest in reclaiming Lucys desire to learn and do well.
