Information about Julia
In 1986 I gained an upper second degree from Cambridge University in Natural Sciences (specialised in biological subjects) and subsequently obtained a doctorate from the University of Southampton in Physiological Plant Pathology.
I worked as a research scientist for the Natural Resources Institute in Chatham, Kent for four years and then as a lecturer in Postharvest Technology at Silsoe College, Cranfield University. I retrained as a secondary science teacher obtaining my qualified teacher status in 2003. I was by then a mother and I chose not to return to full time work. When my son was younger, I did voluntary one to one teaching at his lower and middle schools. Over the last decade, I have worked as a supply teacher in schools throughout Bedfordshire and have tutored privately. More recently I have taught part time as a biology teacher at a local sixth form college.
Willing to travel: Home Only
Experience: I have been privately tutoring local children for nine years. They have ranged from Y6-Y12 but the majority have been Y8-11. I offer all three sciences and maths up to GCSE and biology at A level. I offered highly individual tutorials which cater to a student`s specific needs. I have seen my students gain in confidence and go on to exceed their expectations in exams. My students have previously come from personal recommendations and I have tutored from home. In this time of social distancing, I have been tutoring some of my students remotely and I have been pleasantly surprised how well virtual tutoring has worked. Students who have not been able to get normal teacher contact time are really appreciating having some one to discuss their subject with directly.
