Information about Helen

I have worked in a range of contexts with children as well as adults.

- One-to-one tuition
I have an excellent track record of providing one-to-one tuition, with both tutees and their parents reporting many positive outcomes: increased self-confidence, higher academic attainment, greater enjoyment at school, increased engagement in writing and reading, better concentration and increased motivation for learning.

- University of Oxford
In 2016 I will be running a programme in Place-Writing as part of Oxford University`s Undergraduate Diploma in Creative Writing.

- Crisis Skylight Oxford
I currently run an arts programme for Crisis Skylight Oxford, where I have also delivered a number of courses in creative writing for people experiencing or at risk of homelessness.

- Writing group
As a published writer I am part of a group in which writers meet to read, write, provide feedback and support to each other. I find this a creative and enriching experience, and enjoy providing constructive and creative responses to peoples` work.

- Soft Touch Arts
I planned and delivered creative workshops for young people in Leicester. These were often centered around a theme, such as `Belonging` or `Identity`, and used arts-based tools to encourage participants to explore what was important to them and the world around them.
The culminating exhibition for one of these projects was featured in the Guardian as an `Editor`s Pick` in 2009.

- Creative Journeys
I ran arts-based workshops for young refugee and asylum seeker children in inner city schools in Nottingham.

- Angel Row Gallery
I worked for Nottingham`s contemporary Art Gallery to develop and deliver outreach projects based around the themes of current exhbitions.
Tutoring Approach:

Examples of feedback from parents:

‘[Our son] was awarded Star of the Week for showing great motivation for staying in over lunch to finish his story. This is an accolade to you for giving him a much more positive attitude to writing. Last year I was anxious [he] was falling behind in literacy. [He] would literally not want to go into school if literacy was the main part of the day.’

‘You were caring, creative and encouraging and that was exactly what [our daughter] needed. The story she wrote with you was honestly the most creative piece of writing she has ever done. I believe the work you did together has increased her confidence and enjoyment of writing and we are all very grateful.’

I have a range of experience and training in participatory approaches to learning, and believe that we learn by `doing`. My lessons are collaborative and interactive, encouraging a shared learning journey guided by the curriculum which I seek to make relevant and meaningful to the interests and skills of each tutee. I inspire tutees to take a real interest in their work. I believe learning is fun, and I want to pass that on!

I offer each new student the first session for free, to give you a chance to meet me and discuss how we might work together.
