Information about William

I am an environmental professional and have studied science with an emphasis on biology and ecology at Duke University (bachelor’s degree), Yale University (master’s degree), and I am writing up my dissertation for my PhD at the University of Cambridge. I have a brother twelve years younger than me, and I enjoyed helping him with his homework before I left for university, and that early experience helped me realise how much I enjoy teaching. I have an international background, being both British and American and growing up mainly in Kenya, so I am comfortable working with people of different backgrounds and cultures. I am enthusiastic, approachable, and patient. I have a passion for helping children improve their confidence in school, to inspire a curious mindset, and to meet their individual goals.

My philosophy in teaching is to encourage confidence in a student`s own abilities. Instead of giving answers, I have students go through all of their thinking and their methods in answering questions, and then I have them check their own work. This helps them to deal with problems that may seem unfamiliar to them, and to have the confidence to give considered answers rather than just hopeful guesses.

My approach is to prepare students to break down the question at hand, identify what methods they need to answer the question, to scrutinise and answer the question as best they can, and lastly to check their own answers. This approach ensures that each student has a full understanding of the subject and the methods being used before moving on and building upon their growing knowledge base, and it allows for responsibility in a student’s own learning and growth.

I want students to be at ease and enjoy themselves in our one-on-one interactions, so my lessons are low-pressure, and my students are set ambitious yet realistic goals. By helping students become more self-assured and see their own progress, they can have more confidence in their own abilities and see that they are capable of reaching their own goals.

Availability: I have one availability left for online tutoring on Thursdays from 5pm to 6pm.

Willing to travel: 50 miles

Experience: I have been teaching a number of students (mostly science and mathematics from KS2 to A level) to help them catch up and fill in knowledge gaps __ or even to get ahead in their studies __ during this time of increasing online and independent study. I have experience teaching students up to the post-graduate level (masters’ students at Yale University in the USA), but I also have experience teaching students in primary school, secondary school, and at the undergraduate level. With my educational and professional background, I know how to communicate concepts in a straightforward way and how they can be applied in the real world.

William has been great with my 13 year old son, in developing his confidence and capability in science. William takes the time to patiently explain concepts and support understanding. Importantly my son also enjoys the sessions. Thank you so much William!

We found William on tutor hunt earlier this year for my sons maths & science improvement needs, as my son is in his last year of primary and the end of year exams are coming up so I want him to get into a very good secondary school, so I decided to get him that extra boost of quality education from privarte tutoring. In my searches for a tutor aside from their qualifications I also focused a little more on how they are with kids and their adaptability to their nature. I can easily say that my son is very much enjoying his lessons with William which is also helping him to learn more confidently. I noticed that William has good communication skills during lesson time which makes it easier to understand the work, until now there already is an improvement in my sons ability to problem solve based on the quality of tasks and homeworks given. I am confident that with the current rate of improvement, my son will acheive great results at the end of the year thanks to William.

William helped my son with his A level retakes in October 2020 when he did not get the results he expected from his teacher assessment grades (due to the actual exams being cancelled). When I selected William he had very few references so I had to take a bit of a leap of faith. My son has not had his results yet so it is difficult to say how successful the tuition was (hence only the four star review) but I can say that we found William to be extremely knowledgeable of the subject concerned (environmental science) and highly familiar with the curriculum which was a great starting point. On day one he helped my son write a revision timetable which included targets and deadlines and ensured he was following this structure as the weeks progressed. He boosted my son’s confidence and by the time he took the exam he was in a much better place thanks to William’s calm, encouraging and structured approach and, I think, had even started to enjoy his revision programme! They only had six weeks together (two 1 hour sessions a week) and had a lot to achieve in that time but I am hopeful of some good results and will re-post once these come through but feeling very positive that they will cement all I have said above. UPDATE: Took my son from D to A grade in his A Level My son re-sat his Environmental Science A level exam in October 2020 after receiving a D in his end of year results. He had approximately six weeks with William from start to finish (two lessons per week) and I am delighted to say that after an intense and focused six weeks he achieved an A grade. William’;s calm and methodical approach certainly did the trick and I would highly recommend him. Investing in a tutor is always a bit of a risk, especially if you only have a few reviews to go by but in our case the investment paid off and I know my son would not have achieved this grade in so limited a timeframe without William’;s support. I thoroughly recommend William and I know my son would too who particularly felt his knowledge of the current curriculum and therefore what was likely to come up in the exam was excellent. We took a leap of faith and it really paid off! Highly recommended.
