Information about Theo

Hello! I`m Theo, a 24 year old Science tutor from Bromley!

I`m a Durham University graduate with a first class (honours) in Biological Sciences - I`ve been tutoring and teaching for three years, and have over 500 hours experience - but more on that below!

I grew up in Hayes, Kent, and went to state schools, finishing with top results before heading up to Durham. After graduating, I worked as a Graduate Teacher for Science and Drama at Forest School, London, before going on to train as an actor at the Oxford School of Drama.

I now live in London, and besides teaching am an actor; I recently finished shooting a six-episode mockumentary series in Ireland.

My other interests include reading (fantasy, classics and historical fiction - I am currently narrating the audiobook of a recently published YA fantasy novel), running and gaming.

Availability: I have very good availability and work days, evenings and weekends - I also like to be flexible for my clients.

Feel free to drop me a message for further information about my availability at the moment!

Willing to travel: 5 miles

Experience: I have been tutoring since 2018 and have over 500 hours of one to one tutoring experience. I currently work freelance, and with 3x London Tutoring agencies.

In the 2019/20 academic year I worked as a Graduate Teacher at Forest School, London - teaching Science and Drama. My role involved teaching classes of all ages, leading one to one and group revision sessions, and running numerous Science and Drama extra curricular activities around the school.

In the past year I have worked with students of all ages and have had excellent results. My six GCSE students all scored 7s or higher at the end of Y11.

I have worked with students with dyslexia, dyslogia and ADHD/ADD.

This academic year I am already home-schooling one student as their sole Science GCSE teacher, supporting an SEN Y10 student in English and Maths, and helping several students from Y10–13 in Science GCSE and A-Level.

Some case-studies of students I have worked with recently:

Nathan (GCSE Separate Science and English 2020-2021)
Grades: Biology/Chemistry/Physics 5/5/4 -> 8/8/9
When I began with Nathan at the start of Y11 he was a gifted student, but struggled to apply himself to work and needed support with revision. Nathan often required a firm, but fraternal, approach – he really did want to do himself justice but would let himself down. We therefore split our sessions between tricky subject content and exploring revision methods – I would set him weekly revision homeworks, and we would explore exam questions together in session. I could then suggest to him revision strategies to explore for the next week. This really worked for Nathan - I saw him excel particularly over lockdown, becoming diligent and driven. By exam period he was producing well thought-out revision timetables and carrying them out with a real commitment and a strong and personal method of revising. At times I felt more like a coach than a tutor for Nathan, but that’s what he responded to and it seems it paid off!

Lucy (GCSE Combined Science 2020-2021)
Grades: 3/4 __> 7/7
I’m very proud of Lucy for her GCSE Science results. I worked with Lucy from the start of Y11, and she would often describe herself to me as ‘not academic’. When we began together she was hoping to score 5/5 – the minimum she needed to qualify for a college course in veterinary nursing. As we worked together I saw her confidence grow and grow, until we reached a wonderful moment in the March where I asked her if she needed in-lesson revision support for a large topic in advance of her mock exams, and she told me she felt she could handle it alone. A real transformation! True to her word, she went on to score an 8 on that test, and then went on to score far higher than the 5/5 she was aiming for in her finals. She’s now decided to continue with Biology at A-Level, and I couldn’t be happier for her!

‘Theo was immediately engaging and enthusiastic. His knowledge of the subjects is excellent, and he helps with revision techniques too. Lucy went from being anxious and apprehensive about her GCSEs to actually choosing Biology A-Level as a subject. Her confidence improved massively and that was all down to Theo! I would not hesitate in recommending Theo as a tutor.’

Daniel (GCSE Combined Science (Foundation) 2020-2021)
Grades: 3/2 -> 5/5 (Top score possible for foundation!)
Daniel was a student with dyslogia that I began work with at the start of Y11. He had very low confidence in science which had been further knocked by the interruptions caused by COVID. We worked together on the fundamental content of each science, ‘filling the gaps’ in his knowledge and linking these more basic ideas to the science he was meeting in Y11. The result was a far stronger understanding, which boosted his confidence dramatically.

Daniel’s biggest obstacle was his dyslogia, which made him struggle to express his ideas clearly. We developed strategies for overcoming this, including using bullet points and planning answers, using mind-maps and other visual methods for content recall, and building a library of ‘sound-bite’ definitions and phrases that he could deploy for questions on each topic. I hope he can take many of the techniques and skills we worked on together into his A-Levels next year!

‘We highly recommend Theo as a tutor due to his professionalism, subject knowledge and patience. He has excellent communication skills and really helped to develop our son`s confidence as Science was one of his weakest subjects. He also provided tips on study strategies and as a result, our son made rapid progress and therefore did well in his GCSEs.’
