Information about Jo
Hello! I`m an Oxford graduate with a huge passion for music and tutoring experience of over 8 years. I read Music for my undergraduate at The Queen`s College, Oxford, where I was also a choral scholar in the chapel choir, and then completed my Master`s in Musicology at Linacre College, Oxford.
I started learning the violin aged six and at age 13 gained a government scholarship to study at the specialist music school, The Purcell School. I played viola in the National Youth Orchestra for two years, performing at venues that included the Royal Festival Hall, the Barbican, and the Royal Albert Hall. From a young age I have taken part in music festivals and have won classes in Wantage and Oxford Musical Festivals. I have ABRSM grade 8 on violin, viola and singing and ABRSM grade 5 music theory. I learned viola with Mark Knight, professor of violin and viola at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama.
I am happy to tutor absolute beginners of music theory, violin and viola up to grade 5 for theory and grade 8 for violin and viola. For academic music I am happy to tutor for GCSE and A level as well as giving support for students at lower and higher levels.
I believe in a friendly and motivational approach to learning with regular testing so that lessons are most effective for improving.
Availability: I currently have a good degree of flexibility during the working week as well as at weekends, so please get in touch and I will always try to accomodate you.

Experience: I have been tutoring since January 2014 and have had tutees ranging in age, from aged 8 to adult learner. The instrumental teaching I have done has been varied in style and has included helping a student of the Suzuki method learn to read music, teaching a beginner violin player to play Arabic songs on the violin, teaching Irish, Scottish, English and American folk tunes, and teaching classical viola and violin to absolute beginners. In my music theory tutoring, one tutee achieved a mark of 97 out of 100 in Grade 5 Music Theory. Another tutee I tutored for AS and A2 level music went on to his first choice university to pursue a Music degree.

Jo is clearly passionate and knowledgeable about her subject, which I found very encouraging. She helped me to extend my knowledge outside of the course requirements, which was a key part in helping me achieve a grade 9 in GCSE. She has excellent communication skills and is always eager to help outside sessions. Jo breaks down concepts in a very clear and concise manner, which is why I would recommend her regardless of your music level/capability as she really helps you to improve.
