Information about Jo

I have recently completed my Masters in Musicology at Linacre College, Oxford University, and before that graduated in July 2016 with a degree in Music from The Queen`s College, Oxford University, where I also held a choral scholarship.

I started learning the violin aged six and at age 13 gained a government scholarship to study at the specialist music school, The Purcell School. I played viola in the National Youth Orchestra for two years, performing at venues that included the Royal Festival Hall, the Barbican, and the Royal Albert Hall. From a young age I have taken part in music festivals and have won classes in Wantage and Oxford Musical Festivals. I have ABRSM grade 8 on violin, viola and singing and ABRSM grade 5 music theory. I learned viola with Mark Knight, professor of violin and viola at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama.

I am willing to tutor absolute beginners of music theory, violin and viola up to grade 5 for theory and grade 8 for violin and viola. For academic music I am happy to tutor for GCSE and A level as well as giving support for students at lower and higher levels.

I believe in a friendly and motivational approach to learning with regular testing so that lessons are most effective for improving.

I am also able to tutor via Skype (for academic subjects and music theory) and have found this works well, having tutored three previous tutees this way.

Willing to travel: Home Only

Experience: I have been tutoring since January 2014 and have had tutees ranging in age, from aged 8 to adult learner. The instrumental teaching I have done has been varied in style and has included helping a student of the Suzuki method learn to read music, teaching a beginner violin player to play Arabic songs on the violin, teaching Irish, Scottish, English and American folk tunes, and teaching classical viola and violin to absolute beginners. In my music theory tutoring, one tutee achieved a mark of 97 out of 100 in Grade 5 Music Theory. Another tutee I tutored for AS and A2 level music went on to his first choice university to pursue a Music degree.

Jo is clearly passionate and knowledgeable about her subject, which I found very encouraging. She helped me to extend my knowledge outside of the course requirements, which was a key part in helping me achieve a grade 9 in GCSE. She has excellent communication skills and is always eager to help outside sessions. Jo breaks down concepts in a very clear and concise manner, which is why I would recommend her regardless of your music level/capability as she really helps you to improve.

Having had a few sessions with Jo, all I can say is that She is beyond excellent.
Jo not only has expertise but also a strong academic background which makes her a very knowledgable tutor in both practice and theory.

I am very grateful to have her as my viola tutor and will carry on booking sessions. To anyone interested in developing their violin/viola skills: don’t hesitate. Jump to the deep end and contact her

Jo is an amazing violin tutor. I am a beginner adult learner. Jo is really flexible with her time, understanding and gives very clear instructions. Lessons are really enjoyable, she adapts her tutoring to how quickly/slowly I am grasping techniques and I feel like I make really good progress with her. Highly recommend!

Before my first lesson, I lacked the confidence that I could actually pursue this beyond a minor hobby but after having lessons with Jo, I am certainly going to continue having viola lessons!!!

She is kind, understanding and helpful to beginners like myself. She also encourages her students to attend orchestras or find arrangements that the student likes.

All in all, Jo is an exceptionally friendly and helpful teacher who has helped me want to pursue the ambitious but attainable goal of grade 6 in two years time.

Jo is helping my son with his A level music. He is finding his sessions most helpful and useful and Jo is answering his questions and increasing knowledge base.
