Experience: I have been tutoring Latin, Ancient Greek, Classics and Italian for over 10 years, and have several thousand hours of experience teaching these subjects to students and pupils of all ages. Additionally, I have been working as a Latin and Classics teacher at an independent day school for girls in London (and hold a valid CRB certificate) and have taught at a state high school (liceo classico) in Italy. I have also taught undergraduate Latin and Greek at UCL`s Department of Greek, and have worked as a Latin teacher to mature students at both the UCL and King’s College Summer School programmes.

Tutoring Approach

My approach to tuition is to construct individualised tuition programmes for each student, paying close attention to their precise needs as they progress in their subject. To this end, I plan extensively for tuition sessions, and prepare materials and resources for each tutee week by week.

I am a strong believer that engaged students are successful students. As such, it is my aim to make any subject that I am tutoring as interesting as possible. So often, students fail to sustain their efforts in a subject due to a lack of interest in areas that they find tedious, particularly grammar. However, I have found by relating such problems topics in some way to something that the student finds interesting or by supplementing each tuition session with something different, interest and progress can be maintained. As someone who is very passionate about studying and teaching classical studies and languages, I am driven to encourage others to feel the same way as I do about them, at least in some way.

For me, it is also critical to ensure a safe learning environment during sessions where tutees feel comfortable to ask questions and are free to explore their subject. Moreover, I believe in encouraging students in their progress so as to build up their confidence.

In addition to tutoring Latin, Ancient Greek, Classics, I have a great deal of experience teaching Italian to non-natives - Italian is my mother tongue. My preferred approach for teaching Italian is to encourage students to talk as much as possible in the language, even novices. Though this can be difficult at the start, I find this to be the quickest and most effective route to improvement. In addition, it is vital to supplement this kind of learning with grammar, listening and writing exercises, all of which I tailor to the individual’s needs.
