Information about Tomas

I have a strong belief in live music and the act of performance. The benefits upon personal creativity and expression, alongside the broader effects on confidence and self-assurance while growing up are immeasurable. I have been performing as part of bands and in theatre since the age of 12, and still am at my most content when performing music live, something I do regularly as a guitarist and member of several live musical projects.

I encourage pupils to work towards performance whatever stage they are at from 8 year olds learning a piece and performing it to parents at home to teenagers and adults working towards playing their first gig, it is the act of preparing and performing, no matter what level of formality that I believe is so beneficial.

The technical understanding and rigours of a musical education are very important, something I learned and benefitted from studying BMus Popular Music at Goldsmiths. However my lessons aim primarily to focus on nurturing the creative elements of music so that confident and enjoyable playing is the first goal. Once a love for music and playing has been established in this way, a musician’s desire for developed musical understanding naturally follows, and this is how I seek to teach.

Availability: As a freelance musician, sound engineer and tutor, my availability is flexible and lessons can be arranged to suit your needs.

Willing to travel: 3 miles

Experience: I have previously taught individual pupils of at primary and secondary ages, alongside working on music projects in schools and have experience working at a primary level Maths and English support group. This broad experience of working with children has been important to me and I enjoy teaching and being a part of the musical and personal development of others.

Alongside this teaching experience I have played in numerous musical projects over the last 10 years so have a developed understanding of working with other adult musicians in a variety of contexts and settings.
I believe it is important for teachers to be practitioners actively engaged in the world of their subject. For me that is live music and I have experience as a touring and recording musician around the UK and in Europe over the past two years.
