Information about Lucy

I have just graduated from Oxford University where I studied English Language
and Literature. Now, I am taking the Post Graduate Diploma in Law at [contact detail removed].

Alongside my studies, I produced three plays at university. I was my
college representative for the ski trip, and I sat on the ‘What’s A Pound’ charity
committee, where I work to inspire and help members of other universities to
join our campaign. I enjoy travel, playing the piano, and socialising with friends
and family.

I have thoroughly enjoyed my education so far, and want to pass this joy on to
others. As well as needing to assess the pupil’s academic level early on, I like to
get to know their interests and style of learning in order to plan how best to
learn with them. Where they lack confidence is where I work hardest to get
them enjoying themselves, engaged and thinking about the matter from a
different angle, or using examples that they can relate to. My aim is to nurture
a love of their subjects in order to make them want to learn and improve.
Classes must be enjoyable and positive processes.

Availability: I have a lot of availability until May of 2022.

Experience: In 2017/18 I spent two terms as an English teaching assistant and sports coach at
University College Junior School. Teaching English mainly involved preparing and
delivering lessons to groups of advanced or struggling students. With some students I
was tasked with one-on-one reading and comprehension classes. I spent a lot of time
helping pupils with creative writing, developing their vocabulary and writing style. The
Head of English there was a wonderful mentor, providing me with frequent
constructive feedback. My ability to teach improved drastically.

Alongside my job at UCS, I worked part time as a swimming coach assistant at the local
swimming pool, helping me to improve my rapport with young students as well as my
communication skills. I also tutored two pupils. One was a year 8 maths student, who I
helped with homework and the topics that he struggled with. His grades steadily
improved over the two terms. The other was 11+ Verbal Reasoning, Non-Verbal
Reasoning, and English;; he secured offers from every school he sat the exams for,
including Westminster, St. Paul’s, University College School and City of London. I
believe the key to his success was to find texts, topics and themes that excited him;;
tailoring the lessons to the pupil’s specific needs is essential.

I also completed two short periods of teaching and social work in the children’s homes
at the El Shaddai Child Rescue Charity in Goa, India in 2016 and 2018, mainly teaching
English. Tackling the language barrier with very young pupils was a great challenge, as
was managing mixed abilities of pupils in large classes.

Recently, I attended the TeachFirst Taster Programme and have been fast-tracked to
their assessment centre for a potential space on their graduate scheme. At the Taster,
I co-prepared and taught an 8-minute English lesson to a class of ten year 7 pupils.
Here, I learned the importance of adaptability – sometimes the plan needs adjusting,
depending on the pupils’ engagement and reactions.

All the time I have spent teaching and tutoring (and even babysitting), and the
benefit of having younger cousins, means that I am able to first and foremost get
along with pupils. It is so important to establish a strong relationship with them,
in order to be able to inspire and challenge them, pushing them in the direction
of achieving their goals and to enjoy the learning process.
