Information about Richard
I am a GCSE, iGCSE & A Level Mathematics tutor now based in Farnham with 5 years tutoring experience through a reputable agency in London.
Maths has been in my blood from a young age and when it came to choosing a degree subject it was a natural choice. I gained a 1st class degree from Imperial College London and was lucky enough to use some of the maths I studied in my previous career as a Derivatives Trader in the City of London. I decided to leave that behind to spend time with my young son (and now daughter too) and follow my desire to teach.
My approach to tutoring varies according to each student, their current standard and their personality, but I always aim to make maths interesting, relevant to real life and give some context where possible. I like to let the student guide the topics that we study together but I always look for signs that more basic ideas have been misunderstood or missed in case we need to backtrack. I always try to ensure that the building blocks of a topic are in place before moving onto harder topics or questions and, over the weeks, I try to build a picture of their strengths and weaknesses and identify areas of the syllabus that may need further work, which perhaps in class, have been left behind.
The recent changes to the A Level and GCSE exams have made it vital to be able to make links between topic areas. To push students to achieve the top grades it is essential to make these associations and I focus particularly on the connection between graphs and algebra and being able to use the two in tandem.
The greatest power of private tuition is the instant feedback one can get (and give!). I always encourage my students to ask questions. If they find a concept difficult to grasp, I will search for alternative ways of communicating that idea and I feel that this is one area where having studied maths to a higher level myself plays in my favour.
Availability: I have some availability and will do in person lessons in the Farnham area.
Willing to travel: 10 miles
Experience: I have completed over 1,500 hours of tutoring, teaching over 40 different students aged from 8 to 35.
Most of my students have been studying for GCSE, IGCSE or A Level for the Edexcel and AQA boards. I have also taught Key Stage 3, general maths skills and Core Maths AS Level.
I have also tutored Microsoft Excel, which I have 20 years experience using as an enthusiast and in a professional capacity, from basic to a very advanced level.
DBS Check: Yes
