Information about Marcus

I am a 25-year-old Oxford graduate (first-class honours) and fully-qualified English teacher with three years` experience teaching English Literature and English Language at Hurstpierpoint College, an outstanding, mixed-sex independent school in Sussex. I have taught students ranging from Year 5 to Year 13. My classes at GCSE and A-Level consistently attained excellent results and I am familiar with a variety of exam-boards. Currently, I am a full-time postgraduate student at King`s College London completing my MA in Film Studies - something of a passion project. My intention is to return to teaching on completing the course. In the meantime, I am offering 1-1 tutoring lessons. I am a professional, friendly and knowledgeable tutor with a wealth of tested learning resources.

In terms of my tutoring approach, I pride myself on providing a tailored service which responds to the particular strengths and needs of the student. Through questioning, constant feedback on work and adaptive planning, I hope to develop a system of teaching and learning with the student which will best ensure their continued progress.

I generally build my tutoring sessions around practice papers, example answers and mark-schemes, breaking down the tasks so the student can work on the elements they find most difficult. English is a subject which requires a whole host of skills - timing, planning, structuring, careful reading, comprehension, accurate SPAG (spelling, punctuation, grammar), creativity, analysis, proof-reading - and my lessons encourage students to identify their areas for improvement and to implement practical strategies for overcoming areas of weakness.

Above all, I consider myself a warm and enthusiastic teacher. It is my belief that students learn best when they are engaged yet relaxed, when they feel motivated to ask questions and reflect positively on their work. With academic pressures as intense ever, it is my intention to provide sessions which make the student feel in control of their work.

Experience: In the three years preceding my masters, I was a teacher of English Language and English Literature at Hurstpierpoint College. I taught students from Year 5 through to Year 13 and my exam classes at iGCSE and A-Level achieved exceptional results. I have taught English using a range of exam-boards, including Edexcel, OCR, WJEC and AQA. I am therefore familiar with their respective specifications, mark-schemes and course structures. In particular, I have extensive experience teaching and marking English coursework. As Head of Year 9 English at Hurstpierpoint, I have valuable experience designing department-wide learning resources which effectively promote good pupil progress.

I also worked closely with Year 12/13 students to support them in their university applications, running mock interviews, supervising EPQs and scrutinising personal statements. This is something I find very rewarding, and would be delighted to help with.

In my recent work for the education consultancy London Scholars, I have worked with students to develop their Verbal Reasoning and English skills in preparation for 11+, 13+ and Common Entrance examinations. Please don`t hesitate to get in touch if this is something you`re interested in.

Marcus is very professional in his approach. So far my daughter has had about 3-4 sessions with Marcus and we have already seen a big improvement in her writing skills. He is patient and engaging and always arrives with a prepared lesson plan. We hope to continue with Marcus this fall.

Marcus is very professional, organised and very hardworking and he has the ability to engage my son, exceptionally well throughout the lesson. I have nothing but the highest praises for Marcus’ teaching approach and effectiveness. He is also a very exceptional English Tutor. He is very knowledgable on the material that my son is studying and has gone through it, thoroughly with him so far. Marcus tutored our daughter through her English GCSE exams in 2019. Alice wanted help with English Language, particularly creative writing. Marcus`s work with Alice helped her structure her writing and prepare her not only for her creative writing exam but also with an approach to her writing and written questions across different subjects. She gained confidence as well as knowledge from her tutorials.
Marcus is easy going, engaging and fitted straight in with a busy household.
During Alices recent exams Marcus took the time to check up on Alice and offer encouragement.
I`m happy to highly recommend Marcus.

Marcus has been an excellent tutor for my son who is taking his GCSEs shortly. He is extremely well prepared and organised, with presentations for each session. He gives me immediate feedback and a summary of what has been covered and what needs to be done. A*!
