Information about Will

I am an enthused, erudite individual, who has had a significant amount of classroom teaching and one to one tutoring experience.

Taking on tutoring as a full-time endeavour since September 2018 has been an incredibly fulfilling experience. When I started, my goal was to offer affordable tutoring to those who need a leg up with their education and I am confident in saying that I managed to meet and exceed those expectations. For academic year 2018-19, 83% of the students I tutored obtained Grades 7-9 for AQA GCSE English Lit and Lang examinations. Not only did they improve academically, but their confidence in their approach to assignments developed remarkably as well, not to mention their enjoyment of the subject. During this time, I also had the privilege of helping an SEN student through their GCSEs. The moment when they told me that they had not only passed, but passed well will live long in the memory.

My approach to tutoring is to instil the inherent passion I have for English as a subject. Having completed a BA in English at the University of Leicester, I have since completed an MA in Creative Writing. In other words, I have dedicated my life to English. Not only am I equipped with the tools to assist any learning ability to unpick tricky passages and work through difficult to understand to task, but I am genuinely enthused about the content we are working through.

Each session is developed to match the specific needs of the student. Tutoring offers students the context to go over any content not fully understood in class. It gives students the ability to ask fundamental questions in a safe space, without the fear of seeming like they are not keeping up with their peers. But most of all, tutoring allows students to work and develop on the specific elements to help them get the grades they deserve.

If you are at all interested in my services, then please do let me know. Would be more than happy to assist in any way I can!

Experience: As of week commencing 26/8/19, I have had over 500 hours of tutoring experience. This has included GCSE, KS3 and KS2 support.

In the last year of my English degree I spent 3 months at Groby Community College gaining 40 hours of valuable hands-on experience. This included helping individual students, as well as taking a couple of lessons towards the end of my placement. As well as the teaching, I had to complete academic projects to complete the course. This was a module that I gained a First (72) on.

I also work with local charity PoetsIn, taking poetry workshops that support the mental health of participants. It is a remedial process, that does incredibly good work for local people. I am incredibly proud to be a part of this organisation.

Previously, I have worked for a charity called Phase, a Hertfordshire based operation, whilst completing my studies. This took form of a support group to help students with pastoral needs, to help them voice their concerns on topics such as exam stress and bullying.

In the second year of my English degree, I volunteered as a mentor at St Martyrs Catholic school in Leicester. This was an hour and a half a week, which I did on top of my studies. In this time I worked with one particular student over the course of it.

Although not directly teaching experience, I`ve spent the last two summers as a tour guide at a lavender farm, taking small groups of around 8 to larger groups of around 50. Over the last two summers I`ve taken upwards of 50 different groups on such tours.

My son is so pleased, the tuition from Will has given him confidence in his ability and he has helped him to hopefully pass his English GCSE. Before we started with Will, my son had completely given up and saw no future for himself. I highly recommend Will to anyone looking for an English tutor.
