Information about Rosie

OXFORD UNI CLASSICS & ENGLISH GRADUATE & QUALIFIED ENGLISH TEACHER

I am an Oxford University graduate, where I studied Classics and English and obtained a high 2.1 grade. I am a fully qualified secondary school teacher, and have worked as an English teacher for 3 years in a total of 4 schools in London : 2 Ark secondary academies, The Elmgreen School and Fine Arts College, Hampstead.
I have taught a total of five Key Stage 3 classes in this period (Year 7, 8 and 9), 7 GCSE classes and 3 A-Level classes. In my 3 years in secondary education, I have taught and worked as an examiner for AQA and Edexcel English GCSE Literature and Language. I know the following set texts extremely thoroughly: Macbeth, Romeo and Juliet, Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde, A Christmas Carol, An Inspector Calls, War and Conflict Poetry Anthology, Frankenstein.
I have delivered the OCR, AQA and Edexcel exam syllabus to Year 12 and Year 13 students. I have experience teaching the following texts: Othello, The Taming of the Shrew, King Lear, Dracula, The Duchess of Malfi, Paradise Lost, The Great Gatsby, Orange Is Not The Only Fruit, The Bloody Chamber,
The Feminine Gospels, Birdsong.
I am a high-achiever in academia: both as an Oxford graduate and in my pre-university examinations. My teaching experience proves that I am gifted at transferring my high level skills to my students. I am hugely warm, encouraging and positive approach, dedicating to seeing the ability and talent in every child.

TUTORING IN CLASSICS

My degree was also in Classics, and I have a near fluent reading ability in Latin and Ancient Greek. I have tutored these ancient languages since I was 18, for 8 years now. I help students `unlock` the code to these languages, focusing particularly on the basic building blocks that allow them to fit the parts of the language together.
I have tutored a total of 9 students in Latin and Greek GCSE (OCR), Latin A-Level and Classical Civilisation A-Level. I have always covered the Literature aspect of the course, and have experience helping with Cicero`s speeches, Virgil`s Aeneid (Book 4, 6 and 11), Tacitus` Annals and Catullus` poetry.
I have single-handedly taught 1 student Latin A-Level (OCR), for which she obtained a high A*.

With regard to Classical Civilisation, I have taught both the OCR board, and am most acquainted with the following optional modules: `Imperial Image` and `Greek Tragedy`. At Oxford, my own studies focused primarily on Greek literature and post-Augustan Roman history. I am currently also teaching the Cambridge International course, covering Augustan Rome, Aristophanes and Greek vases.

Experience: - SECONDARY SCHOOL TEACHER IN ENGLISH
FINE ARTS COLLEGE
September 2020- present

English Teacher in a prestigious independent school in Hampstead, London for students aged 13-19 specialising in the Arts and Humanities. Responsible for GCSE curriculum as an exclusively GCSE teacher, teaching all sets of Y10 & Y11. I also teach 2 Year 12 classes.

- SECONDARY SCHOOL TRAINEE ENGLISH TEACHER
September 2021 - July 2022
Burlington Danes Academy and Evelyn Grace Academy

I was trained extensively in Ark`s prestigious teaching programme (`Ark Teacher Training`) where I was taught, and practiced, the key techniques of dual coding, checking for understanding for all students, quality first teaching and chunking information. Ark`s partnership with Goldsmiths University meant that I obtained a PGCE during this year.

- FREELANCE TUTOR
September 2014 – present

I began tutoring as an upper sixth student as part of a school scheme to help girls in younger years with their studies. I tutored two Year 8 students in elementary Latin on an ongoing basis throughout this year and helped make tutoring arrangements between other sixth form students and girls in lower year groups. After completing my A Levels in 2015 I set up my own professional profile on the Tutorhunt website and in that summer taught 2 children in KS3 English and Latin respectively. Whilst studying at Oxford University I continued to tutor local schoolchildren, and over the four years tutored 4 children between the ages of 11 and 17 in GCSE and A Level subjects, including English Literature and Ancient Greek. I found that tutoring the latter strongly consolidated my own understanding of the language which I learned ab initio in my first year of studies.

I have now taken up full-time tutoring since graduation and tutor 8 children in different subjects. Over the course of the last five years of private tutoring, interactions with parents and children alike have significantly improved my communication and interpersonal skills. My time management skills have also increased, as I work under pressure to meet the learning objectives of each student. Whilst at university, I also learned how to balance my own academic studies with tutoring.

__TEACHER AT ALPHA STUDY CENTRE
January 2020 – March 2020

I was offered part-time work at this prestigious tuition centre for two months before the lockdown restrictions were imposed. I worked 12 hours a week, and my role included preparing a group of 10 primary school students for their 11+ exams, as well as teaching English as a foreign language one-on-one.

- VOLUNTEER TEACHER
The Society for Environmental Exploration
Jun 2017 – Aug 2017

I taught English in a village located in rural Costa Rica (Osa Pennisula) on a daily basis to a group of 12 school children, between the ages 5-13, for a period of 12 weeks. This volunteer experience was challenging, as I had to teach a class of students of such varied ages, many of whom did not speak much English. I learned how to vary my teaching technique on my feet according to each child’s ability. I soon became passionate about teaching as I observed my students’ progress and increase in confidence.
I also taught local adults in the community fortnightly, which made this experience all the more versatile.
