Information about Rhys
I am a talented qualified teacher committed to helping Primary pupils unlock a lifelong love for Reading, Writing and Maths. Evidenced by solid results, I teach the Primary Curriculum with strategy and zeal and create the conditions for progress!
The high-quality teaching of Creative Writing, Reading Comprehension and Maths has been a priority to me for a long time now. I have inclusively taught the Primary Curriculum in a `Good` Hackney Primary school every day for the last four years. I have worked with hundreds of Primary aged pupils to develop the strategies, resources and philosophy required to make the difference.
Aligned with `Bond` Assessment Papers, I also tutor privately for the 11+ exam and carefully ensure that the appropriate coverage is always made. Informed by research, I provide solid and comprehensive preparation for a range of common entrance exams. I find out what will be in the exam and make the very most of our available time.
Following three consecutive years of teaching Year 6 in a `Good` Hackney Primary School - I have acquired the experience, knowledge, skills and resources to expertly tutor towards and for the KS2 (7-11 years) SATS:
☆ Creative Writing ☆ Years 3-6 / 11+ Standard
I immerse children in new vocabulary and explicitly teach Spelling, Grammar and Punctuation (S.P.A.G) through the main key genres:
Non-Fiction → Non-chronological reports | Persuasive Texts | Balanced Arguments | Newspaper Reports | Information Texts | Explanation Writing | Recounts | Formal Letter Writing.
Fiction → Adventure Stories | Mystery Stories | Fables | Myths and Legends | Play-scri pts | Stories set in imaginary worlds | Stories in the style of a significant author. Children write with fronted adverbials and a range of conjunctions to develop a strong, sophisticated and reliable style.
☆ Reading Comprehension ☆ (Years 3-6 / 11+ Standard) Through the shared reading of appropriately pitched classic children`s texts I explicitly teach the following Reading Strategies to deepen understanding:
Inference | Clarification | Prediction | Summarising | Asking questions | Making Connections | Retrieving Information | Building Evidence | Exam Strategy (Reading Paper) Children apply emerging reading strategies to appropriately pitched practice test papers.
☆ Maths ☆ (Years 3-6 / 11+ Standard) I visually teach the relationship between Fractions, Decimals and Percentages to give children the versatility to excel at Year 6 Sats and 11+ Exams. Children apply their developing problem-solving strategies to appropriately pitched practice test papers.
☆ 11+ Exam ☆ I correlate the Reading Comprehension, Maths, Verbal and Non-Verbal Reasoning requirements of 11+ Common Entrance exams with `Bond` test papers and teach advanced Creative Writing skills across a wide range of genres through shared writing.

☆ My fun and focused Group Tuition classes take place in a clean, bright and professional learning space in: N42DB (near to Manor House, Finsbury Park, Stoke Newington, Clapton and Stamford Hill.)
For one to one arrangements, I arrive at your home with a bank of carefully chosen resources and quickly establish a friendly and professional rapport with your child. I use fun and focused assessment activities to understand your child`s academic strengths and weaknesses and then commit to planning for their progression.
For Group Tuition classes, children record their progress in Literacy and Numeracy exercise books which I provide - along with relevant and up-to-date sample test papers (where appropriate).
