Information about Heather
Hi! My name is Heather and Im English & Maths tutor with 6 years teaching experience and a First-Class degree in English Literature from Lancaster University. I am also working towards my Masters in Teaching (I only have 1 more semester to go and I`m on track to get a Higher Distinction).
I have taught students from age 5-35, with success in helping students prepare for their 11+, SATs, GCSEs, IELTS exams and university admissions, including Cambridge. I also have experience supporting with students with additional needs (including dyslexia, ADHD, ASD, PDA, and anxiety).
Willing to travel: Home Only
Experience: I have 6 years experience working as a tutor. This has been quite wide ranging, as I have worked with students from age 5-35, as well as students who have a range of special or additional learning needs (such as ADHD, Autism and Down Syndrome).
Primary Education Experience: I have worked with a number of students to improve their reading comprehension, fluency, creative writing skills and grammar. I have also helped students with their English SATs preparation and have taught primary level Maths, History and Science.
Secondary Education Experience: I have experience tutoring students in KS3 English and Maths, Foundation Maths GCSE, GCSE English Language and GCSE English Literature. I have also supported students who were getting ready to apply to university (with support for writing their personal statements, preparing for their Oxford entrance exams etc).
EFL experience: I have taught EFL students of all ages and ability levels (from beginner through to advanced). This has included IELTS preparation and support with university applications (personal statements/ essays). I have also worked with younger students who are at the beginner/ pre-intermediate stages, building up their confidence, fluency, vocabulary and understanding.
As I am new to this platform, I have included some of my existing students feedback below. I can provide further references on request.
Singyi from Taiwan (children aged 8 and 10): Thank you for everything you`ve done for kids :) They really enjoy the classes with you.
Philippa from the UK (children aged 10 and 12): Thanks for all your help with Archies story! He seemed very pleased with himself about it today! Thanks for all your hard work with them.
Lily from Australia (twins aged 6):
I can see that Eddies reading is getting better and better. Thank you, Heather. You are amazing. I like how you talk about the story with him and help him to retell it. Its is really helping him to improve. Great job!
Sky from China (child aged 12)
You are an angel and amazing tutor, I am so grateful for your patience with Rosina and us.
Approach
I believe that learning should be fun and tailored to the student. I personalise all my lessons to each students individual interests and needs. For some of my students, this means structured classes with reading comprehension, creative writing practice and games. For others, it means mock tests or grammar practice, whilst some EFL learners prefer more relaxed, conversational practice. Once I understand what my students goals and needs are, I plan my lessons around them. I am kind and patient and my students often comment about how much they enjoy our sessions and how comfortable they feel with me as their tutor.
