Information about Julian
Well qualified and highly experienced tutor available for tutoring physics to A-level standard.
With a professional background in engineering and physics, in both academia and industry, I am passionate about my subject, and can impart that passion to the students that I teach, allowing them to see beyond the equations to understand the meaning behind, and the application of the principles that they encounter. This has enabled most of my students to achieve the very highest of grades, and many of them to achieve more highly than they thought possible. In fact, the majority of my students, particularly those struggling with the subject, gain a minimum of a two-grade increase (e.g. C to A or D to B) from their mock performance to their final result after just 4 months of study with me. That said, I recommend that parents engage a tutor as early as possible during their child`s course, to maximise the benefit of personal tuition.
I am happy to tutor according to any exam board or specification, and will source suitable exam materials whenever necessary, to assist the tutee`s learning process. I provide a full record, in the form of written notes, of each tutoring session, including online sessions, to allow each student to review the work covered in their own time.
My rates are competitive and commensurate with my experience and outcomes. I both tutor in my own home in the centre of Salisbury, and in the tutee`s own home, depending upon distance.
If tutoring at the student`s home, to cover expenses, I charge £5 in addition to the normal tuition fee, for homes within the SP1 and SP2 postcode areas or within 5 miles of my home. Beyond that, I charge £1 per mile distance between my home and the student`s home.
While a session would be of a minimum length of one-hour, I often recommend to parents that a 90-minute weekly session is more beneficial, as it give students time to settle into the session, and maximises their learning. The majority of parents opt for the longer session.

Experience: I am a fully qualified teacher of physics with many years of experience in teaching iGCSE and A-level physics, most of them as Head of Department. I have taught in a number of prestigious schools, including King Edwards Bath, The Godolphin School, and The American School of Marrakech. I hold both Bachelor`s and Master`s degrees from the University of Southampton.

Great experience! Tutor hunt website works really well. Julian was really helpful in tutoring my son for his A level physics - very patient and an excellent teacher. Also very knowledgeable about what is expected from the different exam boards, tops for what they are looking for to get maximum marks and very practical in that the sessions were tailored to what subject we being tested that week (during the Covid disruption, so he’s been having weekly assessments rather than big exams at the end). My son is now on track to get the grade he needs to study physics at university. Thank you Julian!

Really good at explaining topics and any problems I`ve had at school, he`s helped me with. It`s hard to get that 1 to 1 with my teacher at school so these lessons have been really helpful to make sure I`m not behind in anything.

Julian is the man. Taught me the whole A-Level physics course in about a month or two. He knows every little corner of the subject + more on top of that, so he can answer any question you`ve got. I normally found myself feeling more awake by the end of a session than I did going in because his teaching is exciting and I always felt engaged. The sessions weren`t like being taught - more like an interesting dive into something that it just so happens you need to know.
If he`s teaching at your own house, I`ve found he performs best if you keep him stocked up with a supply of digestive biscuits, but be careful not to give him too many because you`ll end up talking about interesting parts of physics that aren`t on syllabus while you both drop crumbs everywhere.
The sessions were a mix of Julian teaching me the course topic-by-topic, going over questions, and covering specific areas as requested. For each topic, he made a set of written notes for me as he taught, and was more than happy to change up the format of the notes to make it work for me, or add in additional points that I struggled with (not that I struggled with them for long).
Any criticisms? Not that I can think of. He never failed to impress with his choice of clothing, always nearly left his car keys at my house, and without fail provided the best physics help I could have hoped for.

I contacted Julian when I discovered my son was struggling with A Level Physics. Possibly like many pupils, my son did not respond to direct parental help so I elected to seek a tutor instead. I found the tutor hunt website easy to navigate and Julian was within our locale. Julian has been responsive to my son`s needs and very flexible in ensuring that a tutor session was held every week in the run up to exams. My son seems to have responded very well to tutoring and my regret is that I did not seek a tutor and employ Julian much earlier in my son`s course.

Julian taught my son from January 2017 right up to and during his A- level exams. The lesson time we agreed on was 1.5 hours each week and the main priority was to fill the gaps in his knowledge of the subject and restore his confidence to ensure good grades in his exams.
Julian was reliable and professional, and my son got on with him well. He always returned full of positivity after his lessons. Julian very quickly began to plug the gaps in my sons understanding of the subject and turned his confidence around, so much so that my son recommended him to several of his school friends who were also struggling with the subject.
I would have no hesitation in recommending Julian, and would use him again for my other children if needed.

Julian provided an excellent standard of tuition for our daughter. He would ensure any areas causing problems were explained and understood.
