Information about Luke

I am an 18-year-old student at the University of Bath studying Natural Sciences (Chemistry with Pharmacology). Through my previous tutoring and volunteering experience (as detailed below), I have learnt to adapt my teaching style to suit the preference of the student. The focus of my tutoring is to develop problem-solving skills, relate content back to fundamental concepts, and provide students with an ability to effectively apply content to exam-style questions.

I try to explain things in the most intuitive and logical way possible, using the basics to explain more complex topics. In this way, I encourage learning that relies more on problem-solving skills and less on memorisation (which is very useful in GCSE Science due to the volume of content). A typical session involves covering subject material (using a presentation and whiteboard) and frequently asking questions to ensure content is understood. Depending on the tutee, homework may be set between sessions and will be marked and visited within the session.

Availability: I have very flexible availability and can therefore provide tutoring sessions throughout the week, including on weekends and in evenings.

Willing to travel: 10 miles

Experience: Whilst at Tonbridge Grammar School, I participated in a voluntary scheme of peer mentoring at school, which involved teaching biology and chemistry to GCSE students with a range of abilities. I also assisted with coaching the younger years’ rugby teams, through which developing my communicative and motivational skills.

Having recently achieved the qualifications that I will be tutoring (GCSE and IB), I have excellent, first-hand knowledge about revision techniques and key areas of the course to focus on.

I have independently tutored four students in the past, all on a one-to-one basis and with a particular focus on chemistry, biology and maths. Despite varying amounts of contact and initial levels, all achieved equal to, or above, a grade 7 in the most recent examinations.
