Information about Becca

I am a recent graduate from an MA program in `Literature and Modernity` at the University of Edinburgh, having graduated from the University of Birmingham in 2013 with a First Class degree in English Literature. I hope eventually to embark upon a PhD so that I might pursue a career as an academic or teacher. As well as deriving enjoyment from the subject itself, I love breaking its content down to others less familiar or confident with literature. I would like to help others enjoy exploring literature as much as I do, and believe that I have the patience, approachability, and competence to help you become at ease with your studies.

Although literary interpretation is ultimately subjective, I am aware that there are certain criteria that examiners like to see in assessed essays. Whilst attempting to nurture the student`s independent interpretative skills, therefore, I also endeavour to help the student to identify what these criteria are and produce a fitting piece of work. These might include a greater depth of analysis, wider knowledge of the texts` context, a deepened engagement with literary criticism, and so on.

I am able to tutor students at GCSE, Highers and undergraduate level.

Availability: I am available weekdays and weekends at all times.

Willing to travel: 5 miles

Experience: Throughout my degree I have worked hard to develop an effective essay writing technique, including the ability to coherently structure an argument and to persuasively argue points. By working this out, I have been able to tutor students that find writing in other subjects difficult. I recently finished tutoring a second year student for her degree in Sociology, for example, helping her get to grips with grammar, essay structure and critical analysis. I am a patient and approachable teacher, with an adaptable approach that accommodated English being her second language.

My ability to teach has been developed by my involvement for the past three years with the organisation of a charitable music festival at the university. Due to Vale Festival`s being a student-run society, the members are constantly arriving at or graduating from university, meaning that knowledge about how to run the festival must be passed on quickly and coherently each year. As Recruitment Manager I compiled a document that explained the ins and outs of organising ValeFest throughout the year so that prospective students in September could quickly gage what sort of processes go into the festival.
