Information about Catherine

I am a qualified teacher who has taught a variety of age-groups as a class teacher and also in small groups and 1-2-1 sessions. I am passionate about finding ways to engage and support students, particularly with mathematics, in which I hold an MA from the University of Cambridge. I first discovered my love of teaching when, as a qualified accountant for a Big 4 Accounting Firm I led a numeracy out-reach program to a local secondary school. I quickly realised that I was having more enjoyment in these 1-2-1 maths sessions than my day-job, so I retrained as a teacher, obtaining my Post-Graduate degree from the University of Greenwich.

Since I qualified as a teacher I have worked in two London primary schools, in addition to living in the US. As a teacher I have planned and resourced maths lessons throughout the year and used effective assessment to ensure my students` progress. I have also been Finance and Enterprise leader, relating maths to business. In the US I gained an understanding of the trend for "Maths-Circles", an enrichment program which stretches students through the use of games and challenges. On my return to the UK I have developed this interest by attending seminars on mathematics and creating a small but interesting maths website in which I discuss various topics including how my two young children relate to maths concepts.

As a teacher and ex-accountant, I pride myself on being highly organised and structured in my approach to lesson planning, which I then am able to quickly tailor to each individual student`s needs. Ever since my first experiences of 1-2-1 teaching in the numeracy program, I`ve recognised the importance of building up my students` confidence as well as their knowledge. I achieve this through carefully personalised lessons, enabling my students to feel comfortable and develop step-by-step understanding, making connections with their other maths knowledge.

Availability: I am available Saturday mornings. I teach my students in a quiet room in my home in central Oxted, and I have plenty of resources available to use in my lessons.
