Information about Fiona

I am a qualified primary school teacher with over twenty years’ experience of working alongside children as a one-to-one tutor. I offer individually-tailored lessons to support and encourage your child, at a level and pace that suits them best.  I can help with SATs, and I have decades of experience preparing children for 11+ exams. I put confidence-building and high standards at the heart of my teaching, and understand that education is about acquiring life skills, like resilience and independence, as well as academic achievement. I have specialised in helping children with special educational needs for 20 years, working with kids with dyslexia, those who are on the autistic spectrum, and those with concentration issues/ADHD. I`m also a music specialist, and use music skills where appropriate to assist learning.  And I`m an author, too - so helping with creative writing is very much my thing. Whilst I principally focus on primary age children, I do take on older children who need help catching up with the secondary curriculum.

Availability: Evenings after school, and Saturdays. I am also available during the day on selected days, for home-schooled children (and can also offer music classes for home-schoolers). I also give video lessons.

Willing to travel: Home Only

Experience: I have a BA (Hons) degree in music, and a PGCE. I taught a reception class full-time for two years, and my PGCE had a KS1 focus, so I am particularly experienced in teaching early literacy and numeracy skills. This has also enabled me to help older children with special educational needs to find their confidence and catch up with the school curriculum. I have lots of experience of helping children with dyslexia, those who are on the autistic spectrum, and those with concentration issues/ADHD. Before moving to Dover, I tutored in West London for twenty years, where demand for 11+ tuition is high, so I have a comprehensive understanding of the requirements of the 11+ exams, including the GL style assessments which the Kent Tests currently favour. I taught in a pupil referral unit for five years, so have lots of experience of working with children who have become disaffected with school and learning. As a music specialist, I sometimes use music skills to enhance learning, if appropriate. I am also an author, and particularly enjoy supporting and developing creative writing skills.

Fiona has been tutoring my 9 year old son for a couple of months now. I can see he has grown in confidence with his English and he enjoys his sessions with Fiona. Fiona understands my son’s needs, she is professional and very kind and supportive. We are thrilled to have Fiona tutoring our son.
