I am a science and maths tutor and a fully qualified teacher of ten years experience working mostly in the villages to the south of Oxford city.
First a little bit about my teaching career.
I took up teaching when I was in my early forties just as my own children were embarking on their own secondary school journeys. I taught in state secondary schools in Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire for 11 years and in this time I oversaw the progress of hundreds of students through their Key Stage 3 Science and GCSE studies and taught physics and chemistry GCSE exclusively to those who chose to do these subjects as separate sciences. My students have done extremely well and achieved pass rates consistently over 95% with many achieving the highest grades. I have a passion for learning and I hope to convey this to my students. I left the classroom to become a private tutor and this is now my primary focus as I love working with young enthusiastic people, helping them to develop their knowledge, abilities and confidence.
Now a little bit about me. As well as being a tutor and a teacher I have had a varied life and career. I have been an engineer, a people manager, and a company buyer. I started my working life emptying bins in a department store coffee shop! I have many skills and experiences and I have often been involved in applying science in the real world. I try to bring some of this in to my lessons, particularly as it can help to show where learning is relevant. I have a family with two nearly grown up sons of my own. I know what it is like to study and prepare for exams and have a good insight in to preparing students for their next steps in today’s world. When you meet me you will find me quite grounded and down to earth. I try to make learning fun and I hope we will enjoy working together.
Next, a little bit about how I work.
My aim is to tailor my support around your needs as far as possible. You will play an active part in identifying areas where you want to make more progress and I will help you to review your own progress and achievements. Over a series of 1 hour sessions we will develop your skills and confidence. I know that you will already be working hard and have other subjects to focus on as well, so it is important that we work efficiently together. I will expect as much from you as you do from me so expect to get tasks to complete between each session. We will discuss what these will be and review them when complete. They might typically be reading, summarising, note making, practice questions and the like. I only ask that you attempt these to the best of your ability. We will try to make the sessions fun as well as productive. I like to use a variety of teaching methods, some traditional, others more contemporary. I often work with a tablet computer and some students like me to email them the notes, diagrams and connections we make in our sessions. I believe in embracing new technology and try to keep my practice current. One way I do this by being an associate examiner. I am experienced with working with students taking all of the main UK examinations boards.
The number and frequency of sessions is not fixed, you may have as many or as few sessions as you wish. I do caution all parents and students however, that real progress is very hard to achieve in just a handful of sessions and that starting well in advance of examinations is much more productive and less stressful all round. Typically I recommend one session a week in the autumn and early spring, perhaps increasing as we approach Easter and the GCSE exams.
Some contractual points: I like to have a learning contract in place with all clients. This basically covers the interests of both parties and sets out expectations and conditions and puts things on a professional footing. I like to speak to all clients before taking on a commission to ascertain your needs and expectations. My charges cover everything so there are no hidden extras.
I prefer to travel to the student`s home. I will normally accept bookings Monday to Friday from 4pm to 9pm in term time and sessions are usually 1 hour. In holiday periods I am available in typical office hours. With notice, I can of course be flexible around this. For example I will occasionally work at weekends in periods leading up to exams.
Whether you are struggling with just understanding science, want to become more confident with the mathematical side, want to improve the quality of your written communication, prepare better for controlled assessments or just need to fine tune your exam technique I am sure that I can help you out and it might even be fun! Why not fill out an enquiry now?
