I am a science and maths tutor working mostly in the villages to the south of Oxford city.
First a little bit about my qualifications.
I am a qualified teacher, from the University of Oxford School of Teacher Training, with many years of classroom and 1- to- 1 experience. My first degree was in Applied Science and this led me to a successful career in the high tech industry sector. I took up teacher training when I was 40, having completed six months as a special needs teaching assistant. I taught in state secondary schools in Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire for 11 years specialising in Key Stage 3 and 4 sciences and becoming the lead physics teacher in my last school. I have taught hundreds of students of all abilities including those learning separate sciences and those with special educational needs..
My students have done extremely well and achieved pass rates consistently over 95% with many achieving the highest grades. I have a passion for learning and I hope to convey this to my students. I left the classroom to become a private tutor teaching 1-to-1and this is now my primary focus. I have for many years now been a senior examiner with one of the leading examination boards as well. I began teaching maths alongside the sciences shortly after starting out on my own and I love the variety and challenge this presents.
Before teaching I enjoyed a varied and fulfilling career in the sciences and engineering and in that time had many roles including production engineer, people manager, and a company buyer, where I got to travel the world. I started my working life emptying bins in a department store coffee shop so I know what it is like to have to climb up the tree. I have often been involved in applying science and mathematics in the real world. I try to bring some of this in to my lessons, particularly as it can help to show where learning is relevant. I have a family with two just grown up sons of my own. I know what it is like to study and prepare for exams and have a good insight in to preparing students for their next steps in todays world. When you meet me you will find me quite grounded and down to earth. I try to make learning fun and I hope we will enjoy working together.
How I work.
My aim is to tailor my support around your needs as far as possible. You will play an active part in identifying areas where you want to make more progress and I will help you to review your own progress and achievements. Over a series of 1 hour sessions we will develop your skills and confidence. I know that you will already be working hard and have other subjects to focus on as well, so it is important that we work efficiently together. I will expect as much from you as you do from me so expect to get tasks to complete between each session. We will discuss what these will be and review them when complete. I only ask that you attempt these to the best of your ability. We will try to make the sessions fun as well as productive. I like to use a variety of teaching methods, some traditional, others more contemporary. I believe in embracing new technology and try to keep my practice current. One way I do this by being an examiner. I am experienced with working with students taking all of the main UK and international examinations boards.
I normally take on clients well in advance of examinations as this is much more productive and less stressful and yields the best results.. Typically I recommend one session a week starting in the autumn and maintaining this through to the summer exams.
Other points: I operate with a learning contract, offer a free first consultative meeting and my charges are competitive. Travel and copying costs are included but there may be a charge for provision of books. I prefer to teach at the student`s home.
Whether you are struggling with understanding, want to become more confident with mathematical techniques , want to improve the quality of your written communication or just need to fine tune your exam technique I am sure that I can help you out and it might even be fun!
