Information about Ian
I am a qualified teacher, from the University of Oxford School of Teacher Training, with many years of classroom and 1- to- 1 experience. My first degree was in Applied Science and this led me to a successful career in the high tech industry sector. I took up teacher training when I was 40, having completed six months as a special needs teaching assistant. I taught in state secondary schools in Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire for 11 years specialising in Key Stage 3 and 4 sciences and becoming the lead physics teacher in my last school. I have taught hundreds of students of all abilities from aged 9 to 35, including those learning separate sciences and those with special educational needs. I have supported university students with maths and statistics courses.
My students have done extremely well and achieved pass rates consistently over 95% with many achieving the highest grades. I have a passion for learning and I hope to convey this to my students.
I left the classroom to become a private tutor teaching 1-to-1and this is now my primary focus.
I have for many years now been a senior examiner with one of the leading examination boards and this gives me an inside view of what is required to do well in national examinations. I have been teaching maths alongside the sciences since becoming a tutor and I can offer this up to pre A level standard.
If you become one of my students I will tailor my support around your needs as far as possible. You will play an active part in identifying areas where you want to make more progress and I will help you to review your own progress and achievements. Over a series of 1 hour sessions we will develop your skills and confidence. I know that you will already be working hard and have other subjects to focus on as well, so it is important that we work efficiently together. I will expect as much from you as you do from me so expect to receive tasks to complete between each session. We will discuss what these will be and review them when complete. I only ask that you attempt these to the best of your ability.
We will try to make the sessions fun as well as productive. I like to use a variety of teaching methods, some traditional, others more contemporary. I believe in embracing new technology and try to keep my practice current. One way I do this by being an examiner. I am experienced with working with students taking all of the main UK and international examinations boards. I also offer Skype lessons where 1 to 1 is not possible.
I normally take on clients well in advance of examinations as this is much more productive and less stressful and yields the best results. Typically I recommend one session a week starting in the autumn and maintaining this through to the summer exams.
Other points: I operate with a learning contract, offer a free first consultative meeting and my charges are competitive. Travel and copying costs are included but there may be a charge for provision of books. I prefer to teach at the student`s home. During the current COVID-19 situation I am offering Skype lessons exclusively. When the situation allows I will return mostly to 1 to 1 visits.
Whether you are struggling with understanding, want to become more confident with mathematical techniques , want to improve the quality of your written communication or just need to fine tune your exam technique I am sure that I can help you out and it might even be fun!

Feedback For Ian (6)
My son seems to genuinely enjoy his sessions with Ian on Maths. Ian is able to teach new material and create interesting lessons to challenge his students, which is particularly important in times like these, when you can`t be face to face. Ian sets homework and provides feedback, so you can see how the tutor/teacher relationship is progressing.
Ian is very professional, but also easy to get in with.
Just what we wanted
Very good easy contact , clear teaching. Thank you
Ian is an excellent tutor for my son. Although my son has just recently started working with him, already I can see that his confidence in Science has grown, and he looks forward to Ian coming round. Ian comes across as patient, and very clear in the way he tutors. I would thoroughly recommend him.
Ian has been an extremely patient and helpful tutor. He has worked with my daughter for her science and maths GCSEs and with my son to consolidate his science/maths in year 9. My daughter`s results were much better than hoped, and I`m sure that this reflects the time and care that Ian invested in supporting her. Would recommend.
