Information about Anna

I am very lucky to have tutored in English, Latin and History for nearly thirty years. One-to-one teaching is highly rewarding as the student’s progress is palpable and one can closely tailor one’s approach to one’s student. I am so proud to have made a difference to each of my student’s academic success.

Tutoring has been the mainstay of my life. I tutored in English, Latin and History to supplement my income as a student and I have been hooked ever since. I am continuously gratified with the immediate rewards that tutoring brings to the tutor. One has the opportunity to focus immediately on the student`s vulnerabilities in their subject and correct them. Schools do vary but there is one aspect of all schools that I have sadly begun to notice, the pressure applied to pupils. More pupils every year come to me because they are unable to attend school due to undue anxiety and stress. I find this incredibly sad as I believe that good schools should have far more to offer than good academic outcomes. A tutor should be brought in to aid their progress at school, not be an alternative. It is, nevertheless, unfailingly rewarding to watch confidence seep back into one`s student.

I have always tutored in tandem with my career as a senior editor in children`s publishing, I studied Archaeology for my BA and was fortunate to indulge my historical passion further when I studied for my Masters. I have always tutored Latin which has enabled me to continue studying it as I am a fervent believer in the need for Latin in the academic canon. It provides the foundation stones for our own language, as well as French, Spanish and Italian. It helps with other subjects in surprising ways, maths, for example, learning Latin trains the brain in the same methodical manner needed to understand much of maths.

I studied for my T.E.F.L. in Egypt twenty-five years ago but my teaching style, honed by time, is very flexible as no two students are alike. The overwhelming advantage of being a tutor is that I have the luxury and privilege of getting to know my student and adapting my process accordingly.

Availability: This does vary but I do most of my tutoring in the day so I have most evenings free.

Willing to travel: 12 miles

Experience: I have nearly thirty years of experience of tutoring and a Masters in History. I don’t have any formal teaching qualifications apart from Teaching as a Foreign Language. I have tutored since I graduated in 1994. I tutored History, English Literature and Latin. It was alongside my career as an editor in Childrens’ publishing. I got my Masters in History in 2000 but tutoring really became my focus around 2005. I began to tutor home-schooled children which led to children that found it difficult or impossible to attend mainstream school, by word of mouth, this became the sole focus of my tutoring and I’ve loved it!
