Information about Sophia

It’s been a while since I graduated from my Master’s degree, what am I up to at the moment?
I am currently an Actuary working in an InsurTech firm dealing with Big Data, Artificial Intelligence and codings. Working closely with Data Scientists and collaboratively with developers. Largely overlapping my actuarial expertise with computer science.

Why Tutoring?
I would like to devote my spare time on private tutoring. This is driven by I am passionate about teaching and particularly found rewarding from seeing my students grow during the process. This has contrast with my minimal exposure on teaching from current full-time job

Whom am I teaching?
Adult/ casual learner
University
A level or IB Diploma
GCSE
Secondary
Primary
Plus, students who would like to pursue actuarial profession

Why me?
The fact that I am an experienced specialist in the actuarial mathematics field has evidenced that I have solid foundation of advanced mathematics both theoretically and in application, and that I am used to explain complex issues to other non-technical audience. My professionalism is supported by my decade of work experience in the City of London. This has also affirmed my ability to articulate calculations in an effective manner, particularly to adults - say to brush up on mathematics or to university students - say to aid them on associating theories to the real world.

I awarded as Tutor of the Year in the Focus Mentoring Scheme when I was working as a student ambassador during my studies for the Bachelor’s degree in Actuarial Science (of which I graduated from the degree in 2008). The award was voted by the students in the ‘focus on higher education’ scheme, which has shown that I have positive influence to secondary school and college students and I am capable to provide an enjoyable learning experience to the students. My teaching experience as a student ambassador will be detailed in the ‘Teaching Experience’ section below.

During my high school years in Amsterdam, I completed the International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma and also had took on roles on babysitting with children between 3-8 years old. This further demonstrated that I can coach those who would like to attain the IB Diploma and I am experienced in interacting with children in primary schools too.

Last but not least…
Any other questions are more than welcome!

Experience: Between 2005 and 2006, I was the Student Ambassador for my university - City University, London. My key responsibility was to mentoring secondary school and college students with the aim to promote university education. I took on the duties as a mathematics tutor at Central Foundation Girls’ School and Bethnal Green Technology College in London. My function was to reinforce the materials that they were taught during the maths lesson, answered any problems they had had and coached them on the key points that need to be learned. As a result and mentioned in prior section that I was voted as Tutor of the year in the mentoring scheme for being approachable and persuasive tutor, and particularly be able to meet individuals’ needs.

During the summer in 2005, I was a mathematics teacher in a YMCA centre in Hong Kong. I taught a class of twenty primary school students. I designed the course syllabi, prepared the teaching materials and implemented fun and games section at the end of every class to boost students’ interests in the subject as well as their attention in class. I received positive feedbacks from parents at the end of the course.

In 2004, I obtained the Mathematics Olympiad Trainer Foundation Certificate (with Honours) at Maths Lab Education Centre in Hong Kong to be certified as a mathematics instructor to teach students who would like to compete in the International Mathematical Olympiad.
