Information about Bethany
Hi, Im Bethany and Im currently a fourth year Chemistry student working towards my Masters. My favourite subject is chemistry (obviously), I love how it is an overlap of both Biology and Physics depending on which field you pick to study. Its also just fun to get to do a bunch of experiments in the lab! This year I`ll be living in Germany to undertake an internship at the Max Planck Institute of Astronomy, where I`ll be analysing the spectra of stars to work out their chemical composition based on emission/absorption lines.
Although I study Chemistry I also have As at Higher (A-level) Biology, English, French, Maths and Physics - you can tell I like science - so I can help you across a range of subjects. I think this knowledge of a variety of subjects helps in the way I teach because I know that a lot of concepts, in maths for example, are applied across the board. I can tutor you in one subject, and help you understand parts of another at the same time. I like to use a lot of diagrams and analogies when I teach to make complex ideas more manageable and easy to imagine.
Every summer I work as a camp counsellor at a summer camp in Texas, so I have a lot of experience working with kids aged 6-17.

Experience: I`ve been tutoring online since 2020, both privately and with the National Tutoring Program, and in that time I have worked with many pupils across a range of subjects. I ask my students what they would like to cover in our lessons and then plan accordingly, making sure what Im teaching isnt just correct, but also lines up with the exact wording required by some exam boards. Diagrams play a big role in my lessons, I think its very important to be able to visualise exactly what we are learning about. This creates understanding instead of just memorisation. After going over the material with students and working through some diagrams, I move on to past paper questions as they are the best way to prepare for exams. Before finishing a lesson, I recap what weve gone over and ask the student if theres anything they would like to cover again.
The most important thing to me during a lesson is that the student feels safe and confident enough to ask any questions they may have - there is absolutely no such thing as a silly question. It actually makes me happy because it means I get the opportunity to help them with something they are actually struggling with. I understand how intimidating it can be for a student to have a tutoring sessions online (I used to struggle with confidence at school myself), and I will change my lessons to suit each student and put them at ease. Its much easier to learn when you feel comfortable.
