Information about Angus

Professional Maths, Physics and Oxbridge Admissions tutor with a Masters in Information Engineering from Cambridge University, that achieved 100% in both Maths and Physics A-Level. I have coached multiple students for GCSE, A-Level and Oxbridge application success.

I know what it`s like studying in school and understand that it can all feel overwhelming and unachievable at times. I break down complicated concepts into small simple steps, building the student’s confidence and skills until they are smoothly solving problems themselves. I use proven, self developed learning methods and materials, as well as advanced sessions for improving understanding.

I believe building a relationship with students built on trust and a common goal is essential to the learning process. Working as a team to achieve the student`s goals instils the confidence and motivation necessary for success. Let`s work as a team and achieve your goals. You can do it.

Experience: Sessions for science or maths at any level follow a proven approach. We take one topic at a time, ensuring that the student`s grasp of it is comprehensive before moving on. The general structure for each topic is as follows:

1. Content - The first priority is ensuring a solid understanding of the content. The most easily understood perspectives have been developed from hundreds of hours of lesson delivery. To spot weaker areas and develop a deeper, robust understanding we will use exercises such as teach reversal. Here, the student teaches content back to the tutor, who asks probing questions from the perspective of a new student.

2. Memory - Although understanding is a key step in the process, it doesn’t secure marks in an exam. For that, the student needs to commit key facts and definitions to memory. Memory tool creation and continuous revisiting and testing of the student, using spaced repetition, guarantees accurate recall in the exam.

3. Practice - Answering common questions with the standard method will become second nature. By doing as many questions as possible the student makes the methods feel natural such that, even under pressurising exam conditions, he or she can perform. Methods can only be learnt in this way. Remembering the formulae with flashcards is not effective.

4. Exam Technique - Finally, we focus on past paper questions which have been split up by topic. This hones exam technique and makes the student aware of common mistakes and how to avoid them. Students are taught how to maximise the benefit from past papers - it’s not just doing as many as you can! Exercises here include spot the error, where students find the error in a pre-completed question and develop habits to avoid it.

I also specialise in Oxbridge Engineering applications, working from exam preparation all the way to interview, working with over 25 students to date. On first look, the Oxbridge application process appears insurmountable, but by breaking it down into achievable skills and competencies it is clear that it can be done. Having moved from a successful application myself to mentoring others to the same goal, I understand both the pressures of applying and the work that is needed for an offer.

An offer gaining application can be broken into four pillars of Oxbridge success and this is how we will structure our sessions:

1. Admissions Test - The ENGAA and PAT demand solving maths and physics problems in lightning speed. With an average time per question of 90 seconds, and the average offer holder scoring under 50%, this test is nothing like that seen at A-Level. Topic specific question banks and special techniques for speed have proven to result in considerable score improvements.

2. Personal Statement - Used to provide proof that you are committed to studying Engineering and have a curiosity for it. You’ll be guided to books and projects that both peak your interest and cultivate ideas about the world of Engineering. You’ll then submit drafts to multiple tutors for final tuning.

3. Exam Results - Strong exam results are essential. I work with students that are looking to secure a top grade and need the techniques to move from scoring an A* most of the time to scoring one every time.

4. The Interview - Advanced problem solving skills and thinking clearly out loud lead to an offer achieving interview. We learn how to justify methods, state assumptions and incrementally work through advanced questions. Finally, we’ll develop familiarity and confidence through a series of mock interviews with a number of Oxbridge engineers.
