Information about David

COVID-19 Update - Currently, I will only be delivering online tuition for the foreseeable future. I have tailored my teaching approach to ensure that my online teaching is effective as possible. What`s more, online sessions are offered at a discounted rate!

________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

I am an enthusiastic, highly motivated and conscientious individual and genuinely care for my student`s progress. It is a privilege for me to be able to pass on my knowledge and enthusiasm for mathematics to others, watch them improve and hopefully acquire some of this passion themselves.

My love for teaching others began when, whilst completing my A level studies, I volunteered to tutor two struggling GCSE maths students after school in the 6 months leading up to their exams. Seeing them finally understand tough concepts and have their own `lightbulb moments` was a truly rewarding experience for me. Since then, I have continued to tutor mathematics both face-to-face and online.

I have just graduated with first class honours in the degree of Mathematics and Statistics BSc from Newcastle University.

Availability: Available most weeknights and weekends and always aim to be as flexible as possible. I am happy to increase the number of hours taught per week if a student feels they need extra support, particularly in the run up to exams or assessments.

Willing to travel: 8 miles

Experience: During my degree I tutored GCSE maths face-to-face on a 1-2-1 basis, with successful grades to show for it. More recently, I have shifted my tuition online in order to keep myself and my students safe during these difficult times. By adapting my teaching style appropriately, I believe that the student`s ability to learn and make progress is not impacted as a result of being taught online.

When teaching online, information is presented by streaming my hand written working using a high quality camera mounted above my workspace. I am a firm believer that the best way to learn is through doing and this is always something I have tried to promote in lessons. Where students are able to, I encourage them to present their handwritten work to me so that they are able to try problems themselves under my guidance. Where this is not possible, I will go through the problems on my end, ensuring that the student communicates their thoughts to me and that it is them and not me who decides on each step to take towards finding a solution. Online tuition in fact has a number of benefits over traditional tuition. I am happy for students to record any parts of the lesson (perhaps explanations or working through a tricky problem) onto their device so that they can refer to it again at their leisure. Never again will students find themselves thinking `now what did the teacher say again?...` Further, I am happy to send over scans of my handwritten notes to students at the end of each session.
Obviously, travel time and cost is no longer an issue for either myself or the student. As a result, my online tuition is offered at a discounted rate representing even better value for money!
If you have any further questions about receiving online tuition then I am more than happy to discuss this with you before committing to lessons.

I always aim to make lessons as enjoyable and engaging as possible for students and hope that they are something to look forward to as opposed to being seen as `extra work`. From the very first lesson, I aim to build a good relationship with students and create a relaxed learning environment where they are not afraid to try something new and make mistakes - this is one of the best ways to learn.
I am a patient and understanding teacher and can empathise with students who may struggle to understand things the first time around. Having only recently left the education system myself, I am well up to date with modern methodologies and approaches to answering exam style questions successfully so I am well placed to consolidate the learning that students have received in the classroom with my own input and insights.
Through my tutoring, I aim to instil confidence and remove any fears or anxieties that students may have around mathematics. For all students it is my goal that under my guidance and with some hard work on their behalf, students will be able to trust in their own abilities.
