Information about Alex

Hello! I’m Alex, a passionate, hardworking and self-motivated teacher of history across the secondary age range. I am a positive and extrovert personality, a passionate and engaging teacher and a self-confessed history obsessive.
Having completed my teacher training at the University of Cambridge and NQT year at an inner-London comprehensive, I have since been employed as Head of History at two prestigious international schools, most recently the British School Quito, where I also taught IB Philosophy. I have a proven record of delivering exciting and engaging lessons across the age and ability range, especially at KS4 and KS5 where I have strong IGCSE and IB experience, achieving 100% A*-C in all three years of international history teaching. I have also gained significant experience teaching the wider humanities subjects, including philosophy (IBDP level), geography, classics, religious education, global perspectives and Latin.
Whatever the subject, I bring to the classroom a dynamic and engaging pedagogy that balances rigour and fun to best hold the students’ attention and draw from them their best work. I have excellent presentation and communication skills, significant managerial experience and a high level of IT literacy, successfully incorporating a range of technology, online and offline, into the classroom. My extensive international experience has given me an adaptability and sensitivity to other cultures, whilst my EAL background (CELTA) has given me a greater appreciation for second language learners which I can incorporate into my teaching.
Finally, beyond the classroom I am a keen musician, sailor, hiker and cyclist with a lifelong passion for music, literature and the arts that continue to inform my teaching. I have played a significant role in the extra-curricular life of students in all the schools in which I have worked, whether organising week-long sailing trips, coordinating MUN or Duke of Edinburgh Awards or hosting debates, film clubs or chess tournaments.
I look forward to the opportunity of discussing my educational background and philosophy with you more!
