Information about Sarah

My name is Sarah and I am a part time tutor, alongside looking after a one year old. I can help your child close gaps in reading in as little as 12 weeks. I offer online lessons and also work with home-educated students.

I start off with an in depth assessment to find the gaps. At the heart of each session will be a levelled book to get the student reading, but with specialist support to improve their reading ability. We will work on different strategies to improve phonics, phonemic awareness, fluency, vocabulary and comprehension all depending on their individual needs.

Which subject(s) do you teach?

I teach reading for primary aged readers from 4 years old and struggling teen readers. I can also teach writing and maths up to 7 years old. I can also provide a phonics and reading program for homeschool children who are beginning to read.

What qualifications do you have?

I have a Master of Education (MEd) and also a PGDipED (PGCE Advanced) from Birmingham University. I also have a BA (Hons) in Education Studies from Exeter University. During my time of study, the education departments were ranked in the top 3 in the UK. I have also been Read Write Inc. phonics trained and have recently completed a Reading Interventionist course which helps tutors to close reading gaps quickly using online tools.

Where do you teach?

I teach only online. This means I am able to work with your child and help them to close gaps in learning regardless of location or if you move location. Children are often more at ease using a computer, than having someone come to their house or having to go somewhere unfamiliar to get support.

What can students expect from you?

If you are struggling to keep up with reading I have some different strategies to try without having to even leave the house. This means you can keep up with your friends reading and not have to keep leaving the classroom for extra interventions.

Availability: Mornings, afternoons and late evenings. Please enquire as this changes weekly.

Willing to travel: Home Only

Experience: What is your background?

I have been a primary school teacher for over 5 years. This was in the UK and then in a British international school in Doha, Qatar. I have recently completed a reading interventionist course which focused on delivering lessons online and closing reading gaps quickly. I also have a MEd in Teaching Studies and a PGDipED (PGCE Advanced) with QTS.

What do children achieve with you?

Children who have worked with me have met or exceeded the attainment level expected for them. I offer alternative strategies to support reading. I can teach using the UK national curriculum (or EYFS if appropriate) and can also support home school families who are looking for reading instruction for their child.

FUN FACT: I have taught children on 4 different continents and this was all in person (not online)!
