Information about Michael

I am an experienced engineer and teacher who is passionate about education and learning, and about supporting others to achieve their dreams and aspirations. Everyone deserves the same opportunities if they have the desire and are prepared to work hard! If there is any issue with that, I welcome the opportunity to help you overcome your challenges.

I was the captain of my school chess team and deputy head boy. I received four A grades at A level and was accepted to St Catherine`s, Oxford, to study engineering science. After a year of working in London I returned to Oxford to complete a Rolls-Royce sponsored DPhil (PhD) in aerospace and mechanical engineering. During this time I was also president of the graduate common room and captain of the graduate common room football team. We won the league in my second year as captain - a first for the college! I was also employed (via a selective process) as college lecturer and tutor for two years of the DPhil. It brought me great satisfaction that in both years all of my students received 2.1 and above, with a good number of these achieving 1st class in the modules that I taught (covering advanced applied mathematics and physics).
I joined Rolls-Royce (aero-engines) after the DPhil to work in Research & Development. While at Rolls-Royce I carried out research on novel aerospace technologies, published a number of technical papers, and led research programmes totalling several million in value. While at the company I won an award for inventing an innovative new technology concept, and I am author on several patents.
In my current capacity as university lecturer, I teach 2nd Year Dynamics and Heat Transfer, and 3rd Year Engineering Management, as well as supervising a number of undergraduate and postgraduate research projects. I have examined a number of doctoral theses. I am also the university representative for the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE) and a chartered engineer since 2013.
