Information about Abby
Im a passionate and experienced Primary School Teacher and KS2 Tutor.
My teaching method is simple. Through game-based assessment, I get to know your child - their likes/dislikes, strengths and weaknesses. Ensuring learning is fun and engaging takes away from the pressures children often face in school. It helps to build confidence and an appreciation of the learning process. I try to incorporate the iPad into each session, either using tried and tested games and apps, editing tools or completing activities on screen. I find the variety and use of technology ensures engagement and, sometimes, they even forget they are working!
From my initial assessment, I then plan structured lessons to work on specific areas of weakness. Every week is planned from my previous weeks assessment to ensure constant progress is being made. I am happy to discuss sessions with you and advise on any educational resources I feel will support your childs learning further.
My main love when teaching is maths. I have built up an impressive range of resources - both concrete and electronic - to engage children and, hopefully, to help to grow a real love of the subject. In my free time, I love running, long walks with my dogs and spending time at my allotment and I often try to integrate these into sessions so children can see how maths really is useful in real life!
Availability: I have online availability on Saturday mornings.
Willing to travel: Home Only
Experience: I have taught across the breadth of KS2 since 2012 and, since 2017, have also tutored children in 1:1 sessions to boost their confidence and, in turn, their in-school performance. Due to my experience, I have an extensive knowledge of the primary curriculum, the expectations put on children and what it takes for children to enjoy the process of learning. In September 2019 - due to demand and a passion for creating individual, focused sessions based on what a child really needs, I left teaching in the classroom and set up as a full time tutor - and I have loved every minute of it since!
My degree in psychology has allowed me a better understanding of childrens behaviours and learning. Throughout my degree I had an interest in learning styles, personality and test-based performance and focused on shyness and performance in my final dissertation. I try to ensure that my approach to teaching matches the personality and learning style of each child I work with.
Since 2017, I have tutored over 60 children - each with differing needs. I have supported many through their SATS; helped to build self-belief and number awareness in struggling mathematicians; engaged reluctant readers through the use of iPad games and apps (doing anything is more fun on an iPad!); prepared children to successfully pass their 11+ entrance exams at King Edwards, Bishops Wordsworth (CEM) and South Wilts (GL); and kept children on track as theyve transitioned through KS2.
I feel I am sufficiently qualified to work on a 1:1 basis with almost any KS2 child and am happy to meet in advance for a no-obligation discussion about the needs of your child.

Finding Abby has been a real blessing! Our son (9-years old) totally lacked confidence in maths prior to his online tutoring sessions and it was difficult to get him motivated in the subject at all. Since the very first session with Abby that attitude has completely changed and he now cites maths as his favourite subject! Its very clear that Abby has masses of experience and a natural ability to engage a young mind. In a short time she has assessed our sons level and is using fun games and challenges to fill in the gaps in his knowledge. Abby has bags of patience and endless encouragement and our child is thriving as a result! Abby is very professional in her comms with us and we wouldnt hesitate in recommending her to others.
