Information about Laura

Since graduating in July 2014 from the University of Surrey (6th top Uni in UK) with a First Class Honours degree in Bioscience (Veterinary) I have for the past 3 years been privately tutoring students in all 3 scientific disciplines from KS2 to A Level all with successful results. Furthermore I am currently in my third year of my PhD studies at The Pirbright Institute, which involves investigating the control of livestock disease. Prior to this I was employed as a Research Technician at the Royal Veterinary College which gave me experience in teaching/assisting students within the laboratory. I am a very hard-working, motivated and organised individual with a strong interest and expertise in Biology and Science, and I look forward to helping all ages achieve their potential and am very excited about progressing my tutoring career.

As a student not so long ago I appreciate the struggles students face with their studies and always try to tailor teaching to each individual student as some teaching techniques do not suit everyone`s learning style. Through personal experience I understand the need for patience and the need to ensure the fundamentals are well understood before moving up to a higher level. I try to share my enthusiasm and passion for Science (Biology in particular) to my students to make studying more enjoyable as well as successful. I actively encourage students ask questions which I feel is a fantastic tool in ensuring the student fully understands. Additionally I find past papers highly beneficial to students so they can learn not only the subject content but also what is expected of them in the exam. Spending time on exam technique and marking criteria is often under-appreciated and something that I am keen to focus on.

Availability: I have a driving license and a car so happy to travel. Live in Seale, Farnham but work in Pirbright. Any reasonable distance considered. Available all weekday evenings and most weekends.

Willing to travel: 15 miles

Experience: During the most recent 2016/12017 academic year, I have had the pleasure in tutoring several students including a Year 13 student studying A2 Biology (Eduqas) in addition to a Year 11 student studying for her Science GCSE exams (AQA). I have also assisted another student during school holidays with her upcoming science iGCSEs (Edexcel). In previous years students I have tutored have included those studying A2 Biology (AQA), which resulted in my student receiving an A in Biology, and also students studying Biology at AS level (AQA), which proved very successful with one student improving from grade E at the beginning of the academic year to a B. My other student received an A for his AS Biology that summer. Furthermore, I have previously tutored a student struggling with her BTEC Science exam which she had failed previously. But after working on improving her confidence and knowledge as well as exam technique, she achieved a pass in her re-take 6 months later. I have also tutored all 3 science subjects at KS2 level, and have experience in providing intense tutoring and revision sessions prior to exam times.

Aside from privately tutoring students I have extensive experience of assisting and teaching students in the laboratory, reinforcing their knowledge learnt in the classroom into practical skills. Whilst I was at The Royal Veterinary College I would supervise students in the research laboratories and help with scientific techniques. More recently I am employed at the University of Surrey as a laboratory demonstrator and facilitator, which involves ensuring students follow good laboratory practice but importantly aiding with students learning in the laboratory. This is highly rewarding as I am able to strengthen the students scientific knowledge and help them apply this knowledge a practical real-life setting which I believe makes science easier to understand and more fun!

Furthermore throughout my undergraduate studies, I was a registered STEM (Science, Technology, Maths and Engineering) Ambassador and visited local schools which involved leading a few sessions to younger pupils to show that Science can be fun and what work can be done within the scientific field.
I am a keen horse-rider with a horse of my own and have plentiful experience of teaching horse-riding to all ages.
